Summary

  1. 'Lions always in control'published at 13:25 British Summer Time 19 July

    FT: Australia 19-27 Lions

    Chris Ashton
    Former England wing

The Lions had complete control from start to finish, in the first half they were so good, way more intense and physical. They all raised their game to the standards we know, they dropped off in the second half but they were always in control.

  2. 'I love representing Australia'published at 13:23 British Summer Time 19 July

    FT: Australia 19-27 Lions

Australian captain Harry Wilson, speaking to Sky Sports: "We're disappointed we didn't get our game going, especially in the second half.

"Nothing will change for us, we need to win two games, we'll regroup and come back next week.

"I love representing Australia, I'm disappointed with the result."

That result reminds me of the Lions' first Test defeat by New Zealand in 2017.

Rhys Webb went over at the death to make the score 30-15, it was bitterly disappointing but the Lions finished the game well.

A famous Lions win then happened a week later in Wellington.

Australia will look at that for inspiration.

David Beckett: I suspect that Andy Farrell will be very happy with the win, but disappointed that the Lions couldn't maintain their first half dominance to be much more comfortable winners – the substitutions seemed to spoil the momentum and cohesion that the visitors enjoyed in the first half.

  5. 'Delighted with win, but plenty to work on'published at 13:15 British Summer Time 19 July

    FT: Australia 19-27 Lions

    British and Irish Lions

British and Irish Lions head coach Andy Farrell, speaking to Sky Sports: "Obviously we are delighted to get the result, to get the first under the belt.

"I thought we did the shirt proud, how we attacked the game especially in the first half was very pleasing.

"I thought we started very well, our game control was excellent throughout and the back row were immense throughout.

"We stood up, our physicality was spot in the first half, but in the second we were a bit loose. Plenty to work on for game two.

"The good thing is we roll on to Tuesday night and the rest of the guys get to put their hands up. It is a big occasion for us.

"We will be dealing with a wounded animal second up, MCG sold out, it doesn't get any better and we expect ourselves to be better again."

Anon: Can’t remember such a dull feeling for a Lion test win. Where's the contest? Where's the excitement?

Rachel T: How is it possible to have a disappointing Lions win in Brisbane?

  9. 'Discipline was right on the edge'published at 13:06 British Summer Time 19 July

    FT: Australia 19-27 Lions

    British and Irish Lions

Player of the match Tadhg Beirne, speaking to Sky Sports: "It was a proper Test match, the last quarter was a battle. Australia will take confidence from that going into next week.

"Discipline was right on the edge. That will be a big focus for us.

"We managed the game well but need to focus on discipline more.

"I loved it, some of the games leading up weren't my best. But I hopefully did the shirt justice."

Australia were without experienced lock Will Skelton and powerful back row Rob Valetini, who both have calf injuries.

Those two next week, if fit, could make a huge impact.

Anon: This is typical, start off great, end up coasting! No drive to see how good we can be. Just like England

Callum: Lions clearly the better team but the subs have been really poor when they’ve come on, especially the front row and backs replacements. Farrell didn't need to make the changes and in doing so he's encouraged a drop in standards. The starting forwards, JGP, Russell and the centres were all brilliant. Only changes for next week (injury permitted) will potentially be the back three.

  13. Undercooked Wallabiespublished at 12:57 British Summer Time 19 July

    Chris Jones

Those close to the Australia camp made no secret in the build-up that the Wallabies were undercooked and underprepared. Quite why they should have been, given this Lions tour has been in the diary for 12 years, is a valid question.

But have they shown enough in the second half to suggest - with some big names to return - they are able to keep the series alive in Melbourne? It's hard to see it happening, but surely Australia will be better next weekend.

However surely the Lions will be, too.

  14. Full-time - Australia 19-27 Lionspublished at 12:53 British Summer Time 19 July

The Lions go 1-0 up in the Test series.

Both sides have loads to improve on before the second Test next Saturday. The Lions started well and faded, but the job was already done.

The Wallabies finished well and will take positives into Melbourne.

Having been outmuscled and outfoxed in the air in the first half, the second forty may give Wallabies fans some hope for the rest of the series. The Lions have not had much ball or territory at all.

The hosts on the whole look like a team who have played just one warm-up game in the build-up and will need to improve for the sake of a competitive series.

  19. Magic Mitchellpublished at 12:48 British Summer Time 19 July

    Australia 12-27 Lions

    Chris Jones
BBC rugby union correspondent at Suncorp Stadium

Alex Mitchell is on to make his seventh straight appearance for the Lions on this tour (including Argentina in Dublin).

It is more than possible he will end up playing in all 10 games, which would be an astonishing achievement for the Northampton and England man.

Harry Wilson again opts to boot the ball. It lands just outside the Lions 22.

Sadly this hasn't been an epic.
