Watch out for Reds prop forward Jeffrey Toomaga-Allen who played for both Ulster and Wasps a few years ago.

The Kiwi has been capped three times for the All Blacks and played against the Lions for the Hurricanes on the 2017 tour to New Zealand.

  5. Curry & Morgan given another shot to impresspublished at 10:59 British Summer Time 2 July

Queensland Reds v Lions (11:00 BST)

Josh van der Flier and Jack Conan are favourites of Andy Farrell, with Van der Flier showing up against Western Force to remind everyone he was named the best player in the world in 2022.

Conan, the only specialist number eight in the squad, is given his first start on tour and he will want to respond to Henry Pollock's eye-catching breaks last time out.

Tom Curry started all three Tests in 2021 but failed to be at his usual high level in the opener against Argentina.

Jac Morgan is now the lone Welsh representative and will also want to push his case forward for a Test spot after his Lions debut against the Pumas.

The back row is so competitive and will continue to change after each game. Balance will be key and Conan's return could well help bring the best out of Curry and Morgan, who now have work to do.

So the announcer in the Suncorp Stadium played a straight bat, unlike his colleague in Perth on Saturday when calling out the Lions team.

    “From Ireland, Bundee Aki…”

And it was the Irish centre who got the biggest cheer from the supporters inside the stadium

  7. Turbulence at full-back for the Lionspublished at 10:55 British Summer Time 2 July

That was such disappointing news for Hugo Keenan earlier. We saw him during the week and he was buzzing after being named in the team for tonight.

Now he's got to wait and Elliot Daly gets another chance to put further distance between himself and the Irishman.

Daly is in brilliant form and you really fancy him to grasp this extra opportunity to impress.

There are spin-offs to this. Keenan will probably now have to start on Saturday against the Waratahs, a game that Blair Kinghorn was presumably going to start.

After tonight, the Lions will have played three games and two of their three full-backs won't have played a single minute. Not ideal.

  8. Freeman ready to respondpublished at 10:53 British Summer Time 2 July

Queensland Reds v Lions (11:00 BST)

England wing Tommy Freeman touched down in every game of this year's Six Nations, becoming the first Englishman to do so.

And he continued that form with Northampton Saints, scoring a hat-trick in Dublin to defeat Leinster in the Investec Champions Cup semi-finals.

The 24-year-old had a solid first outing against Argentina, but his problem is that Mack Hansen - his rival for the right wing spot - put in a standout performance against Western Force.

Hansen was praised by Andy Farrell for delivering the "play of the day" in his chase back to win the ball, adding that moment is "what a Lion should do for his team-mates".

This puts the pressure back on Freeman. Mind games from Farrell?

  9. Cheesum eyes Test spotpublished at 10:51 British Summer Time 2 July

Queensland Reds v Lions (11:00 BST)

Lock Joe McCarthy dropped a player-of-the-match performance in his first game on tour.

Not ideal for Ollie Chessum, who will be hoping his work at the line-out with captain Maro Itoje at England gives him the edge to partner the skipper.

Chessum, who can also play six, is a different player to McCarthy and he will hope to show his work rate and line-out skills.

Less of a bruiser and more of the gel that brings the pack together, I certainly would keep an eye on Chessum.

A bench spot with his versatility could well be on the cards.

  11. Russell and Gibson-Park 'artistic and beautiful'published at 10:46 British Summer Time 2 July

Queensland Reds v Lions (11:00 BST)

    Tom English
    BBC Sport

Much of the preamble to the Lions' second game on Australian soil has, unsurprisingly, centred around the half-back partnership of Scotland's Finn Russell and Ireland's Jamison Gibson-Park, two players that serve as a constant reminder that rugby, though a playground for big beasts, can still be artistic and beautiful.

Their combination is one that will have people shifting forward in their seats with quickening pulses. Rugby is forever in danger of eating itself with its inexorable march towards grunt and aggression, but these two remind you of why you might have fallen in love with rugby in the first place.

Not many have ever had their rugby heart stolen by a one-dimensional big banger. But Russell and Gibson-Park and their potential to thrill? That's different.

Normally a coach wouldn't necessarily play his first-choice 10 on Saturday and Wednesday, but Farrell is making an exception in Brisbane because he, as much as anybody else, is mustard keen to see how these two will gel. Why wait? Just crack on.

The Wallabies named eight players from the Queensland Reds in their squad but only two have been released for this match; Matt Faessler and Hunter Paisami.

That means they're without their top carrier this season Harry Wilson, top tackler Fraser McReight and Filipo Daugunu, who made their most line breaks in Super Rugby Pacific.

However, they do have former Ireland and future Wallabies head coach Les Kiss at the helm and a squad full of motivation.

''We're not going out on Wednesday just to participate.'' said Faessler.

''We want to play our style of footy and take it to them when we can.

"Not a day has gone by that I didn't think about trying to get back for playing the Lions in some regard."

The Reds won eight and lost six matches to finish fifth in the Super Rugby Pacific standings.

They beat Western Force 28-24 in both their matches and were the second-best Australian team in the league after ACT Brumbies, who finished in third place.

The Reds' league season ended on 6 June when they lost 32-12 to eventual champions Crusaders in the play-offs.

The Queensland Reds team includes nine Australian internationals and two former All Blacks.

However, six Wallabies, including flanker Fraser McReight, scrum-half Tate McDermott and fly-half Tom Lynagh, are missing as they are being held back for Australia's Test match against Fiji on Sunday.

The pack has been strengthened by the arrival of prop Aidan Ross, who signed for the Reds after playing for the Waikato Chiefs in the Super Rugby final.

Queensland Reds: Campbell (capt); Anderson, Flook, Paisami, Ryan; McLaughlin-Phillips, Thomas; Ross, Faessler, Toomaga-Allen, Canham, Salakaia-Loto, Uru, Bryant, Brial.

Replacements: Nasser, Blake, Fa'agase, Smith, Blyth, Vest, Werchon, Henry.

  17. The last time they metpublished at 10:28 British Summer Time 2 July

Queensland Reds v Lions (11:00 BST)

    Who remembers the 2013 meeting?

The British and Irish Lions survived a punishing examination from the Queensland Reds to record a 22-12 victory.

Three Owen Farrell penalties and a Ben Youngs try put the tourists 16-7 up after Luke Morahan's stunning try for the Reds in a breathless first half.

After Farrell landed a fourth penalty, the Reds conjured a second score for scrum-half Nick Frisby to make the Lions sweat.

But Farrell's final penalty with three minutes left ensured the tourists came away with the victory.

I think that Morahan try is top 10 individual scores of all time, genuinely it is right up there.

The Lions started with defeat by Argentina in Dublin but bounced back to hammer Western Force in Perth.

I know which game I'd have picked to play in...

Who has inked their name into the Test team?

Putting in that 10/10 performance is always handier closer to Test week and there are still plenty of games to stake a claim.

I think Ben White is going to put a lot of heat on Alex Mitchell for the bench spot in the Tests. He has had a terrific season.

That will be nip and tuck for the bench.

Tomos Williams will be 34 on the next tour, he has been taken out in his prime. He was excellent and was forming an fantastic relationship with Russell.

There will be an endless torment now as to what might have been. He was in great form.

That relationship, even in its infancy, was looking promising.

While rugby may not be a dominant sport in Australia, Brisbane does have a strong rugby history and thriving club scene.

One fan tells me: "Queensland and New South Wales are probably about even when it comes to the game's popularity. But they definitely have a passionate edge up here, rowdier if you like."

A devastating flood inundated the Suncorp Stadium back in 2011 and in recent years the state has seen multiple bushfires.

"Us Queenslanders are built on fighting back from adversity, it epitomises the people and the game."
