  2. Recap: 'Leaking 42 points at home is unforgiveable'published at 18:30 Greenwich Mean Time 9 November

    FT: England 37-42 Australia

A reminder of England captain Jamie George's immediate thoughts following the full-time whistle...

Speaking to TNT Sports, England captain Jamie George said: "I think the blueprint of how we wanted to play was in the first 20 minutes. We put Australia under a lot of pressure. Sometimes in a Test match like that you think the job is done. We took our foot off the gas. Credit to Australia they were very good tonight but we cannot keep doing that, it will be a tough one to watch back.

"It is a fine balance between closing up shop and trying to see out the win rather than attacking. We talk about being brave and courageous and that [Maro Itoje] try was exactly that. We will look at being better.

"The system and the principle all works. We know it works but we didn't quite get what we wanted out if it.

"Tonight, it was the collisions. Leaking 42 points at home is unforgiveable. They got front foot ball and then have some pretty good runners outside."

  3. Recap: England throw away another lead late onpublished at 18:27 Greenwich Mean Time 9 November

    FT: England 37-42 Australia

Defeat against Australia means England have lost their last four Test matches, despite leading in the final quarter on each of those occasions.

Expectation was high against a Wallabies side who had not beaten England away since the 2015 World Cup, and the hosts took the early advantage as Chandler Cunningham-South scored two tries.

Australia hit back through Tom Wright and Harry Wilson to hold a slender lead at the break.

Jeremy Williams dived in at the corner to stretch their lead but England's Ollie Sleightholme opened his Test account to reduce the deficit.

The wing doubled his tally to move England back in front but a loose George Ford pass was intercepted by Andrew Kellaway to restore Australia's lead.

Maro Itoje's late try looked to have salvaged victory for the hosts but Max Jorgenson's last-gasp try handed the Wallabies a first victory in four Tests.

  5. 'It was awesome'published at 18:15 Greenwich Mean Time 9 November

    FT: England 37-42 Australia

Australia's Allan Alaalatoa speaking to TNT Sports: "It was awesome. It was a really good feeling to be out there. In the second half there was a lot of relief on the back of not the start we wanted, it was a bit slow, but we started dominating in the contact areas and it gave us a lot of frontward ball.

"I am really proud of the boys. Again, that belief that came off a good week. We know how hard it is to beat England in a sold-out Twickenham Stadium and we knew that it was going to go down to the wire.

"The message there was to trust our fundamentals. It was, most importantly, to believe in our own system, throughout the Rugby Championship we showed glimpses of that, tonight I thought we showed that the whole game.

"It was a massive step forward and we have a massive game next week. I loved it and it was an even better feel for some of our boys whose first time it was playing here in Twickenham."

Top Balcony Blue: Australia played far better rugby and totally deserved to win. How many tackles did England miss?

I'm not sure Borthwick is up to the job.

  7. 'We have to be better'published at 18:08 Greenwich Mean Time 9 November

    FT: England 37-42 Australia

England head coach Steve Borthwick on his team's defence: "I don’t think we gave our defence the opportunity to be in the right position to go. If you give them the opportunity of turning balls over and the game gets that loose, it is very difficult to get your defence set.

"There were a number of times where tries were scored very quickly off the back of a penalty and we have to be better than that and not put ourselves in that position.

"I think there will be no shortage of motivation in the next game and to get back out there."

  8. 'They saw a chance and took it'published at 18:03 Greenwich Mean Time 9 November

    FT: England 37-42 Australia

England's Steve Borthwick on the messages he gives to players: "I think in terms of the mindset we are trying to develop, it is that the players go out and attack the opposition and I think you are seeing the team do that and seeing the team want to move the ball. England recently haven’t always had that mindset.

"On the flip side, you see the consequences of it, and they turn over the ball. These guys were good, they had the pace, and they had the power, they a saw a chance and they took it."

  9. 'Tremendously disappointing'published at 17:58 Greenwich Mean Time 9 November

    FT: England 37-42 Australia

England head coach Steve Borthwick, speaking to TNT Sports: "It’s tremendously disappointing and gutting. I think all the supporters will be gutted, as am I and the players.

"When you make that number of errors, seven handling errors and 20 turnovers in total, you give the opportunity to the opposition to run in space and score tries and they did."

This is an Australian team that two months ago had a record defeat against Argentina. This team with a new coach, young players, they are learning and not making the same mistakes.

This England team is greater than Australia in terms of potential, but just aren't learning.

Australia hammered by Argentina and then under a new coach started to learn. England not learning. Australia have a fabulous coach, while England picked a mediocre English coach to appease after Eddie Jones.

It is a harsh learning curve and it has happened twice now in a row. England have looked at their best in the last two weeks when they were down and threw caution to the wind, get the ball to Marcus Smith.

They did that, scored two tries, and looked like they were going to break the hoodoo. But then went into this box-kick battle.

One ruck and they win that game. Maro Itoje will be gutted with that last restart.

England have not lost four Test matches in a row since 2018 when they lost five under Eddie Jones.

They were beaten by Scotland, France and Ireland in the Six Nations and then twice by South Africa in their summer tour.

In among all that, they also lost to the Barbarians in a non-capped match to make it six matches in total without a win.

England did lose four matches in a row in 2022 but one of those was also against the Barbarians and therefore not a capped Test.

Composure and a huge amount of skill and bravery from Australia won them that game. One mistake and the game was over.

It feels like groundhog day for England. The ending is this continuous nightmare of not closing out a match. It is a real problem and not unlucky anymore. This is a trend that has stuck with England.

    The end of Borthwick?

Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. Borthwick doesn't learn and is holding England back with negative tactics.
