Well... I'm not sure even the most optimistic England fan or pessimistic Wales fan saw that one coming.

But I suspect the travelling fans will be partying long and hard tonight.

It was a game that will live long in the memory of both nations - but for very different reasons.

England ran riot with a staggering TEN tries as they racked up their biggest EVER score in their 143 meetings with Wales.

It's a win that sends them top of the Six Nations and now hoping Scotland could do them a favour by turning over France in Paris.

If Scotland do that, then these England players could be heading back to the Principality Stadium to pick up the trophy.

As for Wales... well where do you start? Every time you think Welsh rugby has reached a new low, it gets the shovel out and digs a little deeper.

It's 17 defeats in a row but the worst defeat in Cardiff and in the Six Nations was described as a "dark day" by former captain Ken Owens.

There will be more reaction to come on the Rugby Union Weekly and Scrum V podcasts coming out later tonight and further analysis on Rugby Special on BBC Two on Sunday evening.

But why not join live coverage of France against Scotland to see if Les Bleus lift the Six Nations trophy - or if England's stunning win here in Cardiff was enough to snatch the title.

Ellis Genge, Maro Itoje, Ben and Tom Curry, Ben Earl, Alex Mitchell, Fin and Marcus Smith, Tommy Freeman and Ollie Lawrence are surely on the Lions plane with a few of those being the spine of the starting 15!

    Kieran, London

Ellis Genge, Maro Itoje, Ben Earl, Marcus Smith, Ollie Chessum, George Martin, Tom Curry (and Ollie Lawrence if fit) all in the squad... probably only Itoje and Earl to start for me. With the quality at our disposal we should win 3-0 in Oz. Bring it on!

    England head coach Steve Borthwick speaking to BBC One;

"The team has been progressing, this is a young and evolving team.

"We challenged them to go out and play with the attitude that we wanted to play big and they did exactly that.

"All the fans out there, the England fans, so many of them in Cardiff and they were so loud, probably the loudest I've ever heard them in Cardiff. I'm so happy that they've got plenty to cheer about. I hope they enjoy the night.

"The RFU gave me no targets. In this job, coaching England it comes with an expectation. I'd rather work in a job that has an expectation on it than a team that has no expectations.

"I'm delighted I get the privilege of coaching these young group of players. I think this has got the makings of a very good team we just need to keep working at the process."

    FT: Wales 14-68 England

Wales interim head coach Matt Sherratt speaking on BBC iPlayer:

"It's a very difficult one to reflect on, especially now because the emotions are quite raw.

"Probably my overwhelming feeling is just really disappointed for the players, they're a good group of people and they deserve more.

"It's been a tough 18 months and you could probably see today it was a body blow too many."

Asked if he wanted the Wales job full-time, interim head coach Matt Sherratt reaffirmed his commitment to Cardiff.

"No, nothing has changed for me there, I'll be back in Cardiff on Monday preparing them."

  9. We're building something special - Ben Currypublished at 19:21 Greenwich Mean Time

    FT: Wales 14-68 England

Man of the match Ben Curry speaking to BBC One: "This team has been through a lot, I'm really happy for everyone involved.

"It's an unbelievable feeling to be able to give that to not just ourselves, each other but to the fans as well.

"This is what you dream of. I love being part of this team. I haven't had too many opportunities in the last two years, but I've loved coming into camp, I've loved this team.

"Even the lads who aren't playing are helping the lads in the week, it's a proper team effort, I feel we're building something special.

"He's [Henry Pollock] a great player, a great lad. He's a lot of energy, I've loved the energy he's brought the last few weeks, he's going to be great."

  10. 'A dark day'published at 19:19 Greenwich Mean Time

    FT: Wales 14-68 England

    Ken Owens
Former Wales hooker on BBC Radio 5 Live

It is a dark day and tough to watch. I can't question the effort of the players as they are trying their heart out.

We can't match teams physically to give the likes of Jarrod Evans and Ben Thomas an opportunity to test defences.

The best teams that are physical can absorb us. That is the sad part of where we are at in Welsh rugby at the moment.

No one wants to see such a one-sided game. It’s difficult to see where Wales go from here. Showed some fight against Scotland and Ireland followed by a really poor game today against England.

    Andy

People seem to be forgetting the years Italy were getting hammered by a similar score. Wales were poor today, but the U20s beat England U20s yesterday and denied them the title, I don’t think we’ll be having a similar conversation come 2028.

  12. We're gutted - Morganpublished at 19:17 Greenwich Mean Time

    FT: Wales 14-68 England

Wales captain Jac Morgan speaking on BBC One:

"It was a tough game. We are gutted with the result but full credit to England, they were brilliant today and clinical when they had that ball.

"You can't knock the effort of the boys and their commitment in training.

"It will come hopefully and we'll get back to work and try to keep on improving.

"Thanks to the boys for all of their effort over the last few weeks and to the fans who are always coming out to support.

"To be able to play in front of a packed out crowd is something special, we're just disappointed with the result."

England captain Maro Itoje speaking to BBC One:

"It was a fantastic effort from the team, the English support here in Cardiff was amazing.

"We've been building towards this, each game we've shown a different side to us, we're just happy to finish it well.

"You have to keep consistent even when results aren't going your way. I applaud the team because even when results weren't going our way, and there was plenty of outside noise, we kept on being consistent.

"The challenge is to continue to grow, continue to get better even when we get scrutiny. Let's just stay consistent."

What about leading the Lions this summer?

"It's been an absolute honour and privilege to captain the team, the boys have been absolutely fantastic, they've supported me.

"All of this is them and not me. It's a whole collective effort, the players, the staff, the backroom staff, we've all worked towards this.

    FT: Wales 14-68 England

    Matt Dawson
Listen to 2003 World Cup winner on BBC Radio 5 Live

This performance has been out of this season. I did not see England being able to come together so quickly. We have touched on this group of players being different than others might have been.

There is not a chance I saw England getting to this level of performance in Cardiff at the end of the Six Nations.

If they are going to play like this then they are going to threaten in this competition going forward. They were brutal at times today.

    Sam Warburton
Former Wales captain on BBC One

If you win the power game so convincingly there's nothing the other team can do.

This is international rugby, it's a brutal and physical sport and power wins and England completely obliterated Wales.

They were just physically far superior. There was nothing Wales could do and that was the hardest watch for me, because it just showed the gulf in physicality.

You can't take anything away from England.

They were 14 points up in a heartbeat and then they just dominated the game.

Every mistake that Wales made, they punished them.

They've been very clinical, it was a professional job, you can't ask for any more from England.

The demise of Welsh rugby is criminal. Nearing on devaluing tournament rugby to have a team this disastrously bad. Teams have had bad spells but this is another level.

Yeah Matt... and it's a day to truly forget if you're Welsh!

The record books have been ripped up for all the wrong reasons.

Just to clarify... it was a record defeat for Wales in Cardiff, the most points they've conceded in Cardiff and their heaviest Six Nations defeat and the most points conceded against England.
