Scotland I don't think will be anywhere near as poor in the second half. They can't be.

They need to kick better and play the game in Ireland's half.

  2. 'Still plenty of intrigue in this'published at 16:13 Greenwich Mean Time 9 February

As poor as Scotland have been, this one is far from over.

Ireland's pack, marshalled expertly by returning warhorse Peter O'Mahony, have produced a monumental effort and a 12-point advantage is the least they could have hoped for.

Scotland have to come out fighting in the second half. There is still plenty of intrigue in this one.

We are back under way at Murrayfield.

Will we get more of a contest in the second period?

[Prendergast has] been one of the shining lights, one of the three best performers on the pitch.

He's very composed, a good kick strategy, good decisions on when to run, when to kick, when to play the ball in front of his forwards.

He's been a master of control.

  5. 'Quite a welcome home'published at 16:11 Greenwich Mean Time 9 February

For all the amazing attacking and finishing like that try that Van der Merwe brings to Scotland, he is a liability that they have to carry in defence. I think Scotland have enough attacking threats that I would put someone who contributes in defence as well.

No side enjoyed a greater share of territory in round one than Ireland did against England (58%).

Despite their domination of the first half in Murrayfield, that number has actually fallen by 2% so far.

  8. 'Everything has been difficult for Scotland'published at 16:04 Greenwich Mean Time 9 February

    Martin Johnson
England's World Cup winning captain on BBC One

Everything has been difficult for Scotland. Kicking, holding onto the ball and winning their own line-out. That is just Ireland.

I thought they might be a bit flat after a big win last week, but it has been anything but. They steamrolled Scotland in the early stages.

To go in 17-5 at half-time as opposed to 17-0 is a completely different mental landscape.

Hopefully Scotland can come out in the second half and fight for a foothold, because that first half was ropey.

An outrageous finish from Duhan van der Merwe.

    Boy did Scotland need that!

A stunning finish. It was going to take something special and it came through that offload from Stafford McDowall.

    Scotland 5-17 Ireland

An entirely one-sided first half comes to an end, but Duhan van der Merwe's flying finish has just about kept Scotland in it.

Before that play, Ireland chewed Scotland up and spat them out.

To make matters worse, Finn Russell and Darcy Graham have both come off injured and will not return this afternoon.

Try SCOTLAND 5-17 Irelandpublished at 40 mins

    Duhan van der Merwe

A spectacular finish in the corner gives Scotland a glimmer of hope.

Stafford McDowall offloads to Duhan van der Merwe out wide and he flies over an Irish tackle to stretch and dot down before he goes into touch.

Blair Kinghorn's conversion attempt is dragged wide.

  14. Postpublished at 15:57 Greenwich Mean Time 9 February

Scotland get over the ball to win a penalty close to the Ireland line.

    Can they capitalise...?

  15. Postpublished at 39 mins

    Scotland 0-17 Ireland

Ireland have been absolutely immense in all facets.

They wrap up the ball as Scotland try to maul their way over, drag it down legally and will have the put-in at the resulting scrum.

  16. Postpublished at 37 mins

    Scotland 0-17 Ireland

Another penalty goes Scotland's way - James Ryan pinged for not rolling away.

Tom Jordan kicks into the 22 instead of taking the three points.

You sense Scotland have to score a try before half-time to take their hopes from nil to slim.

  17. Postpublished at 36 mins

    Scotland 0-17 Ireland

    No Andy, they can't.

Scotland win a penalty at the breakdown, kick it into the corner, but lose their own lineout.

  18. It's all going horribly wrongpublished at 15:51 Greenwich Mean Time 9 February

    Scotland 0-17 Ireland

    Andy Burke
    BBC Sport Scotland at Murrayfield

Finn Russell off injured. Darcy Graham off injured. Duhan van der Merwe binned. Scrum creaking. Attack non-existent. 17 points down.

It's been a horrible opening 35 minutes for Scotland.

Can they show something, anything, to offer these Scotland fans some hope?
