After defeat in the finals of the first two Grand Slams of the year, world number one Aryna Sabalenka will be determined to go one better at the All England Club.

The 27-year-old missed last year's tournament because of a shoulder injury but reached the semi-finals in 2021 and 2023 - and kicks off the action on Court One today.

Having won 42 of 50 matches so far in 2025, Sabalenka's form could hardly be better as she attempts to add to her three major titles.

Aiming to stop her this afternoon is Canadian qualifier Carson Branstine. It is the 24-year-old's first appearance in the main draw of a Slam and, up against the world's top-ranked player, it's straight in at the deep end for her.

We're on serve here in the third set as GB's Oliver Tarvet looks to secure a dream place in the second round on his Wimbledon debut.

The 21-year, who is ranked 719th in the world and came through qualifying to secure his place in the main draw, is playing some confident tennis at the moment and a superb cross-court winner to hold just now drew the biggest cheer of the match so far.

That was such a solid game from Sonay Kartal.

She is making a lot of plays and moving so well around the court.

Ostapenko isn't interested in any rally over two or three shots at the moment, but Kartal is keeping herself in the rallies for that amount of time.

Could this be another Medvedev marathon?

The two-time semi-finalist loves a Wimbledon epic, with 14 of his 27 matches going four or five sets (seven each).

But history - an logic - suggests he will prefer to get things done in four sets, having won six of those seven and only three when it has gone the full distance.

Now he is a break down in the third set and getting tetchy.

  14. Heat-watch - Wimbledon's hottest opening daypublished at 12:46 British Summer Time 30 June

    Harry Poole
    BBC Sport

It feels only a matter of time before Wimbledon enforces its heat rule.

A reminder, that will happen once temperatures exceed 30.1C.

The previous record temperature for the start of the Championships was 29.3C, set in 2001.

The Met Office confirmed just before midday that temperatures had risen to 29.7C at Kew Gardens, and they say this is provisionally the warmest start to Wimbledon on record.

The hottest temperature ever recorded during the tournament remains the 35.7C reached in 2015.

It remains to be seen whether it gets quite that warm, with temperatures in the UK only ever exceeding 34C in the month of June in three years since 1960 (1976, 2017, 2019).

  15. 'Ostapenko looks a bit hot and bothered'published at 12:45 British Summer Time 30 June

If you look at Sonay Kartal, she looks kind of cool and calm.

If you look down at the other end, Jelena Ostapenko looks a bit hot and bothered.

  17. Game and second set - Belluccipublished at 12:44 British Summer Time 30 June

    Bellucci 6-7 (2-7) 6-3 0-0 Crawford*

Oliver Crawford responds in brilliant fashion with a hold to love on his own service game.

Mattia Bellucci makes it three games in a row that finish with a hold to love as he fires an ace down the line to take the second set.

The crowd on court 16 have been entertained thanks to a brilliant contest so far.

  18. 'Kartal can take advantage of this'published at 12:43 British Summer Time 30 June

    *Kartal 7-5 2-6 1-0 Ostapenko

    Jo Durie
Former British number one on BBC Two

Take your luck when it's there! This has been such an interesting game.

Jelena Ostapenko definitely got her first serve percentage up in that second set - she was serving much better and she wasn't having to catch her ball toss so much - but she has just started this third set a little bit jerky.

Sonay Kartal can take advantage of this.

  20. Break back point Ostapenkopublished at 12:43 British Summer Time 30 June

    *Kartal 7-5 2-6 1-0 Ostapenko

Further frustration from Jelena Ostapenko as she swings her racquet into thin air.

In the opening set that frustration allowed Sonay Kartal to take control but in the second it only served to spur Ostapenko on. Which way will it go in the third?

It seems it is in the Latvian's favour...
