The second round is in sight for Oliver Tarvet as he takes the second set!

The British qualifier has been getting stronger and stronger since getting the first break in the ninth game of the first set and it is looking tough for fellow qualifier Leandro Riedi.

Given the heat here there's a bit of a break before we crack on with the third set.

Tarvet - ranked 719th in the world - has popped off court and Riedi is going through some warm ups as he waits for his opponent to return.

    Now can she hold?

    Kartal 7-5 2-6 0-0 Ostapenko*

Sonay Kartal has started both sets slowly and needs to avoid allowing Jelena Ostapenko to build momentum again in this decider.

Ostapenko seemingly has an easy overhead volley to lead 40-30 but she gets it all wrong and slams into the net. The sun may have played a part there.

Elina Svitolina is safely through to the second round after a comfortable 6-3 6-1 win over Hungary's Anna Bondar.

The Ukrainian 14th seed needed just an hour and two minutes to wrap up the victory.

Elsewhere, 22nd seed Donna Vekic has just completed a 6-0 6-4 win Australia's Kimberly Birrell on court 15.

The Croatian breezed into round two in an hour and 20 minutes.

Mattia Bellucci is powering through his service games and holds to love.

Oliver Crawford is almost knocked over by a fierce ace before a sweeping backhand from Bellucci catches him off guard.

The Italian is a game away from taking the second set, Crawford is serving next to try and stop him.

It's all over for two-time runner-up Ons Jabeur, who has just retired from her match against Viktoriya Tomova, while trailing by a set and a break

She has looked uncomfortable throughout the match, taking that long medial timeout and getting through as much water and as many ice towels as possible.

The former world number two has slipped down the rankings over the past year after injury problems.

Earlier this year she had breathing difficulties in the Australian Open second round when she had an asthma flare-up.

Jelena Ostapenko looks on her way to taking this set but it was at this point in the previous set that Sonay Kartal went on a run of winning five games in a row to take the opener.

    Can she do it again?

The heat hasn’t wilted the buzz in the grounds.

Wandering around the tight outside courts in the shadow of Centre Court is tennis utopia.

The groundspass holders are rammed into the narrow gangways. Only the well prepared managed to snaffle a spot on the park-style wooden benches. Picnic perfect.

As well as British qualifier Oliver Tarvet playing here, there are lots of other recognisable names including French veteran Adrian Mannarino, Germany’s Eva Lys and Australia’s Jordan Thompson.

The latter is playing in the court next to his compatriot Chris O’Connell, meaning it is a perfect spot for Aussie Davis Cup captain Lleyton Hewitt - a former champion here of course - to watch both players.

    Tarvet 6-4 5-3 Riedi*

Oliver Tarvet had a little in joke with his college mates during qualifying as he shouted "Gareth" at random points during games.

It apparently relates to former Wales intertional Gareth Bale. Why? The reasons remain unknown.

I've heard no "Gareth" shouts so far but lots of "come on" and "yes!" as the British qualifier moves to within a game of the second set.

After a few double faults, Mattia Bellucci holds in his service game and seals it with an ace.

Bellucci is in control of the second set, racing into a 4-1 lead.

Oliver Crawford is looking a bit despondent after his bright start.

Sonny Kartal raises her arms and smiles as if to say ‘where did that come from?!’ as she sends an absolute ripper of a forehand round the net and down the line to take a crucial hold.

Her coaching team just to my right are on their feet as the court 3 crowd enjoy that moment.

Meanwhile, on court 17, Queen's finalist and 23rd seed Jiri Lehecka has hit back to level at one set all against Bolivia's Hugo Dellien.
