Remember folks, Emma Raducanu has only ever beaten a top 10 player once before, although that was last month against world number five Jessica Pegula at Eastbourne.

Maria Sakkari is the world number nine. She starts the second set with a winner and a double fault. Not the first time her serve has let her down.

Gauff is just the more experienced player at this level but what a tournament for Kartal, not having gone past the first round previously.

It will do wonders for her ranking, help her for the US Open qualifying and let’s not forget about the prize money. Let’s hope this is a building block.

  18. 'Kartal played at high level'published at 18:33 British Summer Time 5 July

    Kartal 4-6 0-6 Gauff

Coco Gauff on her victory over Sonay Kartal: "I thought I played really well. She played a high level, especially in first set.

"It's been a great tournament for her, especially at home and I hope she will be back for more in the future.

"She was playing at a high level and wasn't giving me much to work with. She mixes up her variety and didn't let me settle. I felt I was going for the right shots but just missing.

"Eventually I found them and was able to win."

On what it's like facing a British player at Wimbledon: "This is my first time playing a British player here so I was little nervous because I knew you'd be for her, which is understandable.

"Being an American I know how it feels when I'm at the US Open. When I play at home it gives me an edge.

"Thankfully you guys [the crowd] were pretty nice to me so that helped.

"Honestly, playing in front of the British crowd is great. You're always respectful but engaged."

On facing fellow American Emma Navarro in the fourth round: "Last time I played Emma was earlier this year.

"She's a great player and has had a great tournament.

"It's her first season on grass and she's already in the fourth round but hopefully if I play good tennis it will go my way."
