An electrifying ovation for Jack Draper as he emerges onto a British court for the first time since his wonderful US Open performance.

Given we're officially into the post-Andy Murray era, his run couldn't have come at a more opportune moment where the home fans are concerned.

He warms up to the sound of The Proclaimers blaring out.

That raises a chuckle. As Murray's Instagram followers know, it's the song Draper was boozily singing along to in Murray's car on their way home from last year's victory over France.

    Kids these days...

This is Jack [Draper]'s first indoor match since the Davis Cup finals in Malaga last year so obviously there's that part of it too.

He hasn't played indoor tennis all year. He grew up playing a fair bit indoors so that shouldn't be too much of an issue but it will be a little bit of a transition.

  4. Can Cerundolo win the tie for Argentina?published at 15:52 British Summer Time 13 September

    Draper v Cerundolo

Jack Draper, fresh from his US Open exploits, is up next against Argentina's Francisco Cerundolo, who is ranked 31 in the world.

It should be an interesting match, this one, between two players fairly evenly matched when it comes to the rankings.

But will Draper be feeling fresh and confident after his run to the US Open semi-finals? Or is he not quite fit? He was seen training with strapping on his right thigh earlier this week. He doesn't appear to have any on today but it is a tight turnaround for the 22-year-old after a long couple of weeks in New York.

Cerundolo only went as far as the second round at Flushing Meadows and will be looking to get the tie won before the doubles rubber later on.

Padel is the hip, young thing causing a scene in the world of racquet sports.

And whether tennis purists like it or not, it is making an impact.

A stone's throw away from the Manchester Arena, with the city's cathedral providing a picturesque backdrop, is a padel court set up in the Davis Cup fan park.

Yesterday, Manc comedian Jason Manford was among those having a hit there to promote one of the fastest growing sports in Britain.

That was to mark the Lawn Tennis Association launching its new padel strategy,, external which aims to grow the sport further by "making it more accessible, welcoming, enjoyable and inspiring".

    Jonathan Jurejko
    BBC Sport at Manchester Arena

Dan Evans' love for representing his nation as always been clear.

From his Davis Cup debut as a 19-year-old in 2009, to his Olympic debut last month, playing for Great Britain is something which ha meant a lot to him.

Jack Draper has also shown his commitment to the cause by turning up in Manchester just a few days after his US Open exploits came to an end.

Evans said on Wednesday he has been ensuring Draper realises how important the competition is.

"I actually said to Jack last year 'please, it’s going to be up to you'. I think it’s important for him to here that, it is an important event still and he is going to be the one who is holding the baton.

"You saw his celebrations in the car last year with Andy [Murray] so I’m pretty sure he’s passionate about Davis Cup."

Tomas Martin Etcheverry speaking on court: "I'm really happy for me and my country and my people of course. It was a great battle, Dan is an incredible player and it's so important to get the first point and now it's coming Francisco [Cerundolo] and let's see, I want to support him and try to win of course."

On approaching the net: "I tried to be aggressive, go to the net, serve bombs, I played really good today, I'm really happy for my victory and you know, it's [an] indoor court, we're not specialists on this but every day I try to improve my game here."

On Guillermo Coria, captain of Argentina's Davis Cup team: "He always [supports] me and I try to do my best for him and of course for the team, but he's an incredible coach also, captain, and I really respect him, I think he's one of the best players in Argentina so yeah, of course, I'm really happy."

Well what a fantastic Davis Cup singles - 16 and a half minutes it took for Tomas Martin Etcheverry to serve out the match on his sixth match point.

Dan Evans left everything out there. Some of the winners he produced to fend off the match points, quite incredible. He gave this one everything, just not to be.

You can't help to think of the net cord, had that fallen the other way, could Evans have broken and it taken it to a breaker?

Oh my word. Another huge net cord. At such a vital moment.

Dan Evans can't believe his misfortune.

The Manchester crowd boos the net cord like it's a referee who has given a dodgy decision.
