Second seed Coco Gauff: "I'm happy with how I played, I do think I could have played cleaner in some moments but overall I'm happy to get through to the third round."

On playing better even though more is expected of her after winning the US Open: "Overall, I just learned about life a lot. What I do, I'm very passionate about but it's not ever that serious. It's a game, it's sport. Sometimes the world can make you feel like there is so much pressure and expectation. I'm very privileged and honoured to be playing out here in front of you guys. This is the first court I played on at Wimbledon so Court One is always a special place for me to play on."

On looking at the draw: "I never look at the draws, I only pay attention to who I play in the first and then the next match. At the end of the day, you have to get through that before you play the next. Obviously, I know about some of the withdrawals that have happened and it's very unfortunate and it's a long season so I wish all the players who had to withdraw to be back soon."

It really is fine margins at this level. At 3-0 it felt like there was a bit of a dip in Kartal’s game and Burel capitalised.

Sonay needs to remember what got her to a set and 3-0 ahead. Don’t do anything fancy, keep your feet moving because there is bound to be a few nerves.

That break has, unsurprisingly, given Clara Burel a bit of confidence.

Sonay Kartal is still not making it easy for the world number 45 but a hold of serve brings Burel back to within a game in this second set.

Kartal still holds the break advantage.

It was never going to be completely straightforward, was it?

France's Clara Burel had no choice but to attack the Sonay Kartal serve and is rewarded with a break.

Kartal saved the first break point after 17-shot rally - the longest of the match - but Burel puts away a simple volley at the net to reduce the Brit's advantage.

Carlos Alcaraz got the defence of his Wimbledon title under way on Monday in a straight-set victory against Mark Lajal in the first round, despite an admirable performance from the qualifier.

Alcaraz went unbeaten on grass last year but was defeated at Queen's by British number one Jack Draper a couple of weeks ago.

Also looking to test him will be Aleksandar Vukic, who reached the semi-final at Eastbourne but bowed out in the second round this time last year.

Wow! Daniil Medvedev sat in his chair when Alexandre Muller went 6-3 up in the tie-break. He thought the set was done! Talk about distracted.

He quickly hops back up when he realises his mistake but can't do anything about the Frenchman's huge forehand which seals the world number 102 the opening set at the first time of asking.

A bit of a turn up but fifth seed Medvedev looking somewhat out of sorts here.

Kartal has given very little away in this match and has been as solid as a rock but when she has been In an attacking position.

She is a very thoughtful young woman and the injuries have been difficult to deal with but when we talk about resilience, she is very much that person - grounded.

    Naomi Broady

Sabalenka and Azarenka both withdrew from Coco Gauff's part of the draw.

The earliest of the top matches she could face would be Naomi Osaka [in the last 16]. In the same half there is also Daria Kasatkina, she has to be one of the favourites at least in the conversation for the title, and also big hitting Madison Keys who won Eastbourne last year.

In general it is massively open.
