    Matteo Berrettini

Matteo Berrettini has had an unlucky time of it since he made the Wimbledon final in 2021.

He had to pull out of the 2023 Championships after testing positive for Covid-19, while he has missed this year's Australian Open and French Open because of injury problems.

“I don’t think I am a worse player right now,” said Berrettini, who has dropped to 59th in the world rankings.

“I’ve been through a lot of injuries but I think my level is still there, and actually, I think I have improved some things. For example, I think I return better than I did three years ago.

“I’m still young, even though I aged a little bit. I come into Wimbledon with a different mindset than three years ago.”

It's all on serve in the second set and we'll keep you up to date with how this plays out throughout the evening.

Rekha: What a victory! Emma Raducanu’s on fire!

Jimmy: That is the first time since Emma’s US Open win that she has played anything like the form she showed back then. Maybe this could be something special at last.

Jit: A tricky one for scheduling if the mixed doubles is on Friday, they would want Raducanu on at prime time on Friday evening.

Amy: It's lovely to see the energy and support Emma is getting. She deserves this

Osaka gone, Vondrousova gone, Zheng gone, Sabalenka not playing, Swiatek with a tough second round tie, Sakkari so inconsistent. This draw will probably really open up in the coming days. Raducanu might have a shot at making a good run here. Not sure she's likely to get to the latter stages, but at least her draw is favourable!

'A great moment for our country' Sinner & Berrettini go head-to-head

For a long time, Matteo Berrettini was the leading man in Italian tennis.

But the 2021 Wimbledon finalist has fallen down the ranks and world number one Jannik Sinner has taken his place.

The pair, who are Davis Cup team-mates, are taking to Centre Court shortly for the derby d'Italia.

"We share the same flag, the same mindset and love for the sport. Our dreams are the same," said Berrettini.

Sinner added: "It’s something really nice that our country can have."

It was impossible not to be impressed by everything.

She could do no wrong, she was on top of the baseline, she was so quick off the mark, got to all the drop shots and there was nothing that you couldn't admire about that performance.

I have not seen anyone at this Championships play like that yet.

We can admire all of the top players who are still making their way through the draw but I haven't seen them hit the ball like that.

Let's hear some more from Emma Raducanu:

Is this the best tennis that you have played?

"Everyone else said yes. I played really good tennis and I knew all the hard yards would lead to something and I am just happy I can reap some of the rewards here in Wimbledon.

And what about playing mixed doubles with a certain Andy Murray:

"My doubles record is not the longest but I couldn’t say no. It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity. It’s a dream of mine since I was a young girl watching the Olympics.

"Andy’s a hero to us all, so for me it’s a real gift and a real honour that he asked me. I’m just super excited and hopefully I can learn a thing or to about coming to the net or something."

  12. Sinner set for all-Italian clashpublished at 18:40 British Summer Time 3 July

    Sinner v Berrettini

Top seed Jannik Sinner was made to work before overcoming Germany's Yannick Hanfmann in four sets in round one.

The result was never really in doubt but the Australian Open champion, 22, was given a reminder of what can happen if you switch off, even briefly, as he lost the third set.

Facing his compatriot Matteo Berrettini should certainly help to sharpen Sinner's focus but this will be a big early test at these championships for the new world number one.

It is only three years ago that Berrettini reached the final at SW19 before losing to Novak Djokovic in four sets.

That was the Italian's only loss on grass that year but the 28-year-old has been hampered by injuries in the past couple of years.

Berrettini progressed safely from round one with a four-set victory over Hungary's Marton Fucsovics.

American Emma Navarro, following her win over former world number one Naomi Osaka, says: “Naomi [Osaka] is obviously a great player. It’s great to have her back on tour and she’s playing some great tennis but obviously I wanted to get the win today and was able to play some good tennis at times.

"It was my first time on Centre Court here at Wimbledon, it doesn’t really feel real.

“I’ve been having a lot of fun on grass so far. It’s kind of been the theme of my time on tour so far, just trying to enjoy myself and today was no exception.

"I'm just having a lot of fun and thank you guys for coming out and making it the atmosphere that it is, it’s really special.”

Emma Raducanu reaches the third round of a grand slam for the first time since her run to the US Open title in 2021:

    How does it feel?

"It makes me feel unbelievable. I feel so welcome here and obviously Court one is my favourite court.

"I think I played some really good tennis. I’m over the moon to be playing and just to extend my stay but I want more days. With the roof closed it was super loud and I’m really grateful and appreciative for everyone making a lot of noise.

"I think the most important thig is focusing on myself. I took care of my business and what I needed to do. I think staying in the zone, your own little world creating that environment is the most important thing and serving out a match like that."

  15. Paolini moved to Court Onepublished at 18:35 British Summer Time 3 July

Emma Raducanu's match was meant to be the last on Court One today but because of the rain holding things up on the outside courts, the crowd are going to be treated to a bonus match.

Seventh seed Jasmine Paolini - a finalist at the French Open last month - has had her second round match against Greet Minnen of Belgium bumped up to the show courts.

Paolini's win over Sara Sorribes Tormo was the Italian's first in the main draw at Wimbledon, while Minnen's triumph over Britain's Heather Watson was just her second.

Brilliant to see Raducanu smiling on court and taking the applause of the crowd. It's been a tough couple of years for the 21-year-old with injury and what not. But she looks back and raring to go here.

Here's one of many brilliant points she played during that match against Elise Mertens.
