Jamie Murray has a win under his belt at Wimbledon 2024. After losing in the men's doubles with brother Andy, the two-time mixed doubles champion has won his first round match with American Taylor Townsend.

The unseeded British-American team beat alternate pairing Nicolas Barrientos of Colombia and Japan's Miyu Kato 6-3 7-6 (7-5) on court two.

It's taken an hour and 37 minutes by American Tayor Fritz has his first chance at a break point.

He'll be hoping he doesn't have to wait that long for another because Alexander Zverev saves it with a backhand volley down the line and then strings together a couple of aces to hold.

Mark: A slow start by Yulia Putintseva vs Jelana Ostapenko, but all is not lost for her Sometimes, players exert too much energy at the beginning of matches, and blow up towards the end

Jelena Ostapenko is hitting some fearsome strokes from the baseline which Yulia Putintseva can't deal with.

Another strong backhand forces Puntintseva to go long and the Latvian breaks again to secure the set.

The stats show Ostapenko hit 12 winners to Putintseva's two in that opening set.

Much better from Yulia Putintseva who finally finds success with her first serve to get on the board.

A forehand return winner then puts the Kazakhstani up 15-30 on Jelena Ostapenko's serve, before a backhand winner earns two break points.

And she is gifted the break back as Ostapenko double faults!

When it's cloudy and the roofs are closed it can get humid on the showcourts at Wimbledon.

We're not quite at glasses steaming up level yet, but you can definitely feel the heavier air pressure.

Humid air is actually less dense than dry air - I've just had to search that - which probably goes some way in explaining Jelena Ostapenko's current rapid success.

She's stuck to the baseline and has powerfully outhit her opponent so far. In these conditions, the ball is going to have extra zip and travel that little bit quicker, suiting her game.

Putintseva has barely touched the ball. She’s yet to hit a single winner, she’s only hit one unforced error, bless her.

She’s hardly done anything wrong. She’s as much of a spectator as we are at the moment, through no fault of her own.

Andrew Castle hitting the nail on the head describing Alexander Zverev and Taylor Fritz having a similar game style like the rest of the ATP except Carlos Alcaraz during this current transition from three of the greatest ever men’s players to the up and coming. It’s not just the ATP that has the transition gap it’s also the WTA like the Williams era - No real dominant force to be reckoned with.

It will have to be a huge come-back from the American and this is the best tennis I’ve seen from Zverev on a grass court.

He’s been very impressive so far.

  12. Ostapenko breaks againpublished at 16:42 British Summer Time 8 July

    Putintseva 0-4 Ostapenko*

Ostapenko races through her second service game, holding to 15, with the pace on her strokes proving too much for Yulia Putintseva so far.

It's the same story in the following game as Ostapenko earns a break point, before slamming a return winner past the Kazakhstani to break again.

She's 4-0 up inside 11 minutes here and fans who are late coming back from toilet breaks and refreshments might miss the entire first set if this carries on...

It's a long, long way back for Taylor Fritz now. He's just not been able to make a dent into the Alexander Zverev serve and the German has won the opening two sets with his serve rarely threatened.

Zverev has not had to even fend off a break point in the opening two sets.

Fritz getting it to 4-6 on a tie-break, brought a ripple of excitement through Centre, but Zverev then took the set with the next point, turned and screamed in the direction of his player support.

Fritz needs to move to plan B.

  20. Ostapenko breakspublished at 16:35 British Summer Time 8 July

    Putintseva 0-2 Ostapenko*

It's Jelena Ostapenko who gets us under way and the Latvian comes through the first game relatively untroubled.

She opened up the court nicely with her serves there to set up a couple of forehand winners.

Ostapenko follows it up with a break of serve, with her backhand causing Yulia Putintseva early problems.
