MP inquiry call over Stephen Lawrence police claims

Claims that police have been possibly withholding information about the Stephen Lawrence Inquiry was "really alarming indeed" said the MP for Eltham.

Clive Efford said "this was a form of corruption" and those involved "must pay a heavy price" and he reckoned that was if it was funded by the Home Office then "someone quite senior knew about it".

The MP told the BBC there should be a new inquiry, not handled by the IPCC, as that would mean the "police investigating police and this just is not going to be good enough".

Both the prime minister and Labour's former Home Secretary Jack Straw have called for an investigation into reports police wanted to smear the family of the teenager who was murdered in 1993 in south east London.
