MPs pay rise: Tory David Davis on IPSA recommendations

Plans to give MPs a 15% pay rise are "barking mad" and the government may have to legislate to block the increase, says Conservative MP David Davis.

He criticised the Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority (IPSA) which is expected to say backbench MPs' £66,000 salaries should increase to around £75,000 after the 2015 election.

The former shadow home secretary said it showed that IPSA was "out of touch with reality" and he would propose a motion to stop the increase as the "public would not see the point of this", but he would not be drawn on whether he would accept the rise.

He also told Jo Coburn about his backing for a married couple's tax allowance, which would be supported by fellow Conservative back benchers who "rather feel that they have a government which is not quite Tory enough and this would help, a bit."
