Coalition spending cuts 'heartless' say Labour

Labour, the Liberal Democrats and the Conservatives have been clashing about spending plans, with all three parties accused of being unclear about how they would reduce borrowing by closing the gap between tax revenues and spending in the next Parliament.

Nick Clegg told the BBC his Tory coalition partners planned to "pare back" the state "remorselessly" and their plans did not "add up".

Conservative Chancellor George Osborne suggested Mr Clegg's party planned "hefty income tax rises".

Speaking on the Andrew Marr Show, Labour's Chuka Umunna said spending cuts by the "heartless" coalition were "pulling the rug from under people".
