Pope Francis opens Catholic synod opens amid gay priest row

A synod of Roman Catholic bishops on family issues has opened, following the revelation that a senior priest at the Vatican is gay and in a relationship.

Poland-born Krzysztof Charamsa said he wanted to challenge the Church's "backward" attitude to homosexuality.

The Vatican called his actions "very serious and irresponsible" and stripped him of his doctrinal responsibilities.

Religious affairs correspondent Caroline Wyatt reports from Rome.
