  14. A1 Peterborough and Stamford closure: 'Big recovery operation'published at 09:00 Greenwich Mean Time 28 February 2018

The A1 between Stamford in Lincolnshire and Peterborough has reopened after the road was closed because of adverse weather conditions earlier on Wednesday.

Jack Tappin, from Highways England, said the organisation "began noticing some stranded vehicles" at about 01:00 and "some jack-knifed lorries".

A 20-mile stretch of the road was fully closed while highways officials and police attempted to recover the vehicles, he added.

"It's been a very big recovery operation across three counties - Cambridgeshire, Leicestershire and Lincolnshire," Mr Tappin said.

Although the road had been gritted in advance, a number of vehicles became stuck and people were trapped for several hours.

Highways England worked with ambulance staff and police to "ensure the safety and welfare" of people who had become stuck, Mr Tappin said, adding that no injuries had been reported.
