  1. Walsall lake death: Air ambulance and police helicopter searched lake for bodypublished at 09:15 British Summer Time 21 June 2017

    A teenage boy has died after getting into difficulties in a lake in Walsall.

    It happened at Ryders Hayes Mere, off Ryders Hayes Lane in Pelsall at around 19:00 yesterday evening.

    Police said officers were with his family and their "thoughts and sympathies are with them".

    A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: "While staff on the ground searched the area, both the air ambulance and a police helicopter searched the lake from the air.

    "Tragically, the boy was later recovered from the water and was confirmed dead at the scene.

    "Although it is very hot at the moment, the dangers of going into open water cannot be underestimated."

    Aston Villa have been picked for a live TV appearance on the opening weekend of the new EFL season.

    Villa will open the Championship season with a home game against one of manager Steve Bruce’s old clubs Hull City on 5 August (17:30 kick off).

    Wolves start the season with a home game against another relegated Premiership side Middlesbrough, while Harry Redknapp’s Birmingham City start at Mick McCarthy’s Ipswich Town.

    In League One, Walsall will start the new season at Gigg Lane, Bury.

    A cyclist is in a critical condition in hospital, external after suffering serious head injuries in a collision near to Alrewas.

    Staffordshire Police says the 42-year-old man from Rugeley was cycling in a group of 30-40 cyclists on the A513 yesterday evening.

    A teenage boy has died after getting into difficulty while swimming in a lake with friends.

    The 15-year-old's body was recovered after emergency services went to Ryders Hayes Mere off Ryders Hayes Lane in Walsall.

    He got into difficulty at about 19:00 on Tuesday and the fire service recovered the body just over an hour later.

    It comes as the head of London's police force is in talks with the government about extra funding.

    British number one Johanna Konta is through to the second round of the Aegon Classic in Birmingham.

    Speaking on court after beating Lesia Tsurenko, she said: "I am very happy to come through it in two, she was playing well and I had to keep fighting and not get too far ahead or too far behind."

    The 25 year old needed medical treatment in the second set but told the press she's "good".

    "I'm enjoying the schedule, not so many players get to play so many tournaments at home in quick succession so I feel very lucky."
