  1. Man charged after knife and axe arrestpublished at 16:58 British Summer Time 20 June 2017

    A man arrested near a TA centre in Kidderminster has been charged with three counts of possessing a bladed article in a public place, West Midlands Police said.

    Daniel Bebb-Jones, who has been named locally, has been remanded to appear before Redditch Magistrates' Court tomorrow.

    The 23-year-old, Merton Close, Kidderminster, was detained in Kidderminster by West Mercia Police officers on Sunday evening and the arrest was initially investigated by officers from West Midlands Counter Terrorism Unit.

    Police said following inquires there are not believed to be any links to terrorism.

    A boy has suffered life-threatening injuries after being hit by a car near to Madeley High School.

    The collision happened on Newcastle Road around 15:30.

    Staffordshire Police said the boy, aged 11, is being airlifted to Birmingham Children’s Hospital with life-threatening injuries.

    British number one Johanna Konta battled to a 6-3 7-6 (8-6) win against the world number 34.

    Konta, 26, was a game away from dropping the second set but broke back at 5-3 before going on to win the tie-break.

    Wolves' new signing, 25-year-old Phil Ofosu-Ayeh, said "it's a dream" to play in England.

    The right-back has only played football in Germany, with Eintracht Braunschweig releasing him at the end of the month.

    Ofosu-Ayeh has signed on a three-year deal.

    Former BBC radio presenter Tony Wadsworth has been stripped of an honorary doctorate he was awarded by De Montfort University.

    Wadsworth, of Broughton Astley, was jailed for five years alongside his wife Julie after they were found guilty of indecently assaulting under-age boys.

    A spokesman for De Montfort said the doctorate, which was awarded in 2012, was formally withdrawn following his conviction.

    Two-time Wimbledon winner Petra Kvitova got her grass season off to a positive start with a 6-2 6-3 win over compatriot Tereza Smitkova at the Aegon Classic in Birmingham.

    Kvitova, Wimbledon winner in 2011 and 2014, is on the comeback trail after a lengthy absence following a knife attack at her home in the Czech Republic in December.

  10. Hot weather sees rise in 999 callspublished at 14:08 British Summer Time 20 June 2017

    A weekend of hot weather has led to an increase in 999 calls to West Midlands Police.

    The force says , externalthe number of calls has outstripped the traditionally busiest night, New Year's Eve.

    West Midlands Police took 2,272 emergency calls on 31 December, but on Sunday 18 June, the number of calls peaked at 2,840.

    Chief Inspector Gareth Mason said the force couldn't identify a single cause for the spike, but said "more people tend to spend time outside resulting in more antisocial behaviour reports, alcohol intakes increase and tempers can fray more easily in the heat".

    The average number of calls is just under 2,000 but on Friday 16 June, more than 2,400 emergency calls were made, with the number rising to 2,757 on Saturday before Sunday's high point.

  11. Trapped woodpecker 'swang like pendulum'published at 13:37 British Summer Time 20 June 2017

    A great spotted woodpecker needed rescuing by the RSPCA after it became tangled in a fishing line in a tree, causing it to "swing like a pendulum."

    The RSPCA says the woodpecker was trapped near a canal last Friday in Standeford, Wolverhampton.

    The bird is due to be released back into the wild today.

    RSPCA inspector Kate Parker, who rescued it, said: "The woodpecker had a barbed hook in his wing, as well as fishing line which was wrapped around his wing and a tree. He was clearly struggling and panicking in a bid to free himself."

    Almost 6,500 tests for sleep problems were carried out across Birmingham, the Black Country and Solihull last year.

    Professor Brendan Cooper from Queen Elizabeth Hospital says he's seen an increase of about 40% at the Birmingham site.

    There's been a big increase in the number of people in England being treated, with about 150,000 tests last year - up 37% on the same period three years ago.
