  18. Struck-off breast surgeon 'deceived patients and fellow professionals'published at 16:26 British Summer Time 25 July 2017

A surgeon jailed for 15 years for carrying out a raft of needless breast operations at privately-run hospitals in Solihull and Little Aston has been struck off the medical register.

Ian Paterson, 59, was convicted in a criminal trial earlier this year over operations on nine women and one man, having exaggerated or invented the risk of cancer.

He did not attend the Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service (MPTS) proceedings, which began yesterday, and was not legally represented.

In erasing his name, the MPTS said it acted to protect the public and found Paterson's "actions were serious, intentionally harmful, and took place over a protracted period of time".

Paterson's victims gave their reaction to his jailing in May

It concluded: "He deceived patients, and fellow professionals, by communicating that the patients were at risk of cancer and needed to undergo procedures. He then undertook and charged for these procedures, none of which were necessary for the maintenance of their health. Mr Paterson exploited the trust that was put in him as a doctor, for his own gain."

The MPTS said Mr Paterson accepted his removal from the register as "the most appropriate sanction".
