    BBC News England

A student from Smethwick has been unable to get a loan for university because someone with the same name, birthday and place of birth has already applied for one.

Emily Hughes, 18, was told by the Student Loans Company in April she could not be registered on its system.

She has now sent them her passport in the hope of being recognised in time to study medicine in Birmingham.

Miss Hughes, said: "It's been chaos.

"Just so much unnecessary stress and it's quite embarrassing as all my friends are sorted with their loans, but not me."

  10. Government uses Birmingham to charge up its battery tech planpublished at 17:50 British Summer Time 24 July 2017

    BBC Business News

Business Secretary Greg Clark is visiting Birmingham today and has announced the "Faraday Challenge" under which £246m will be invested in the research, innovation and development of battery technology.

It's named Faraday because next month marks the 150th anniversary of the death of scientist Michael Faraday, who did pioneering studies into electricity and magnetism.

Mr Clark says he also wants to make the UK's energy system "smarter", which, he says, should reduce customers' bills.

A care home worker who sprayed an aerosol can in the face of a 78-year-old woman with dementia has been handed a four-week jail term.

A spokesman for the Crown Prosecution Service said Susan Draper, 43, was later granted bail by the court, pending an appeal to the sentence.

  16. Betty Boylan: Care worker 'dehumanised' victimpublished at 16:58 British Summer Time 24 July 2017

A care home worker who sprayed an aerosol can in the face of a 78-year-old woman with dementia has been handed a four-week jail term.

Susan Draper, 43, was told she had been slovenly, perfunctory and "cavalier" while ill-treating Betty Boylan, whose family uncovered the offence by rigging up a covert camera in her room.

Although the court heard the pensioner was not physically hurt, district judge Ian Strongman said a custodial sentence was necessary to mark the seriousness of the reckless offence.

Birmingham Magistrates' Court was told Draper, of Cranehouse Road, Kingstanding, denied ill-treating the immobile pensioner but was found guilty of an ill-treatment offence earlier this month after a day-long trial heard she had "dehumanised" her victim.

CCTV footage played at the trial showed Mrs Boylan coughing and gurgling after being hoisted into a chair and sprayed in the face in September last year.

In a statement issued after the court hearing, the family of the victim said: "At last justice has been done. "The sentence is a message to all carers who abuse the elderly to let them know what to expect."

  17. Your comments: Carjacking in Solihullpublished at 16:39 British Summer Time 24 July 2017

    Nicola Beckford
    Reporter, BBC Midlands Today

I've been out in Solihull where the community is reacting to the news that a man drove off in a woman's car while she was still inside with her baby.

The man was among a group of four who confronted the driver and demanded she get out of her vehicle when she stopped at the traffic lights on Lode Lane on Saturday evening.

As she attended to her baby, he got into the Audi RS6 and drove off.

She escaped with the infant when he pulled into a side road before driving off again. No-one was hurt.

One lady told me: "Unfortunately there are people in society today who will behave in such atrocious manners."

A local resident said: "[The] area's gone down hill over the last few years, it used to be a lovely area, a sought after area but nowadays it's different all together."

Another lady added: "My heart goes out to her, I don't know how I would have been in that situation."
