  2. Clancy became leader after five attemptspublished at 17:02 British Summer Time 11 September 2017

    The leader of Birmingham City Council became boss of the council on 1 December 2015 after Sir Albert Bore stood down.

    It took Clancy, a former English teacher, five attempts to become leader - and he only won by one vote.

    Sir Albert stood down following criticism in the way the city was being run.

    In August, an independent panel, which was set-up to oversee the council following an inquiry into the so-called Trojan Horse scandal and struggling council services, announced it was standing down after improvements had been made.

    The inquiry said the council's problems were due to its size and the result of a series of poor decisions over a number of years.

    A man charged with the murder of another man in Tamworth will appear at Stafford Crown Court later this week.

    Daniel Wyatt, 30, died from multiple stab wounds on Friday evening on Kerria Road.

    Today, Daniel Alton, 27, from Bancroft, Tamworth, appeared at Cannock Magistrates' Court accused of his murder.

    He was remanded into custody to appear at the crown court on 13 September.

    The Labour leader has been criticised over his handling of the continuing industrial action taken by refuse workers in the city.

    Workers resumed the strike on 1 September after a proposed deal, which had seen the seven-week action suspended, fell apart.

    Last week councillors from the party proposed a no-confidence motion.

    The beleaguered leader of Birmingham City Council John Clancy has resigned over the city's bin strike, according to a message on his Twitter account - also echoed on his website.

    A statement says:, external "It has become clear to me that frenzied media speculation about the Birmingham waste dispute is beginning to harm Birmingham City Council and the Birmingham Labour Party.

    "I can see no end to such speculation, as ill-informed as much of it is, for as long as I remain Leader."

    The police and crime commissioner for the West Midlands says officers could be lost, external if it is forced to increase salaries without extra government funding.

    The government announced it's to lift the 1% pay cap for both police and prison officers, but many forces say they haven't budgeted for the change.

    A man has appeared in court charged with attempted murder after a stabbing inside a church.

    A 33-year-old man was taken to hospital and two others were injured at New Jerusalem Apostolic Church, in Aston, on Sunday morning. None of the injuries sustained are believed to be life threatening, according to the church.

    John Delahaye, 47, from Ettington Road, is also charged with two counts of wounding and being in possession of a carving and kitchen knife.

    The 47-year-old has been remanded in custody and is next due to appear at Birmingham Crown Court on 9 October.

    A man who was stabbed to death in Tamworth on Friday night has today been named by police.

    Staffordshire Police says Daniel Wyatt, 30, from Sorrel in the town died last night after being stabbed several times on Kerria Road.

    The force has charged a 27-year-old man from Bancroft with his murder.
