    Officers searching property

Officers searched the Shipton Road property in Sutton Coldfield, Birmingham, last October. It was once owned by the mother of John Cannan - the prime suspect in Suzy's murder and disappearance.

Owner Phillip Carey told the BBC that police had caused damage totalling thousands of pounds during the operation and said he had been waiting ten weeks for compensation.

He said "our kitchen tops are broken, our fridge freezer’s on the patio, our cooker’s on the patio, we’ve had to loan a cooker, the shed’s collapsing - you name it, it’s broken".

The work involved the excavation of parts of the garden, with a garage dismantled and paving removed. It's unclear how the items listed by Mr Carey came to be damaged.

The Met Police, which led the operation, said it was "committed to restoring the property to its original condition" and was "liasing with the family".

No evidence of Ms Lamplugh's remains were found at the site during the search which ended in November. She disappeared in London in 1986.

  14. Police force 'failing victims of crime'published at 07:33 Greenwich Mean Time 15 January 2019

West Midlands Police has failed to record more than 16,600 violent crimes each year, with some victims "let down and not believed", a watchdog has said.

Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire and Rescue Services (HMICFRS) rated the force - one of the biggest in the country - as "inadequate", having found only 78.2% of violent crime and 89.2% of sexual offences were recorded.

The force is challenging the rating, saying the examination does not take into account its action on recording crime overall.

    Lloyd House

"It does not include the results of other crimes, and consequently it has not recognised the force's overall crime recording from which we have good, reliable crime accuracy," a spokesperson said.

The watchdog - which said the force was "failing victims of crime" - was not able to look at other types of offence because the force was updating its systems.
