  4. 'Shocking' car-jackings 'could be linked'published at 16:52 Greenwich Mean Time 14 January 2019

    A series of car-jackings, including one in which a mum and two children were threatened by armed men, are believed by police to be linked.

    Four incidents were reported in Coventry on Sunday, starting at 16:15 in Abbey Road, Whitley, where men made off with a couple's white volvo.

    Half an hour later, a man's Ford Focus was car-jacked in Chetton Avenue, Radford.

    At 19:00, offenders made a failed attempt to smash their way into an Audi A3 in Stoke.

    The mum and two children were threatened by men with knives and metal bars in Dawlish Drive, Stivichall, as they returned home in a Seat Leon at about 19:20. The robbers demanded the keys and drove off in the vehicle after the victim had pulled her children to safety.

    Det Insp Stuart Bell, said: "This is a shocking series of robberies involving weapons that was undoubtedly terrifying for the victims. We have drafted in additional officers from outside Coventry to help in the investigation and to catch those responsible".

    Police have since recovered the Focus and Leon.

    Two men have been arrested following the theft of a media pass for the Prime Minister's visit to the Portmeirion pottery factory in Stoke-on-Trent.

    The pair, aged 46 and 58 and both from the city, are being questioned on suspicion of burglary.

    A cat is recovering after being rescued from a shipping container, thanks to his brother who helped raise the alarm.

    Aslan went missing from his home in Mancetter, Warwickshire, on Wednesday.

    His owners had no idea where he was but noticed his brother, Arlo, kept going to sit by a shipping container at a nearby factory site.

    The fire service was then alerted and had to clear out piles of furniture to find him - right at the back of the 40ft unit.

    Crews said it had been like looking for "a needle in a haystack".

    A man who died in a crash has been identified by police, external as 20-year-old Samuel Myatt.

    Staffordshire Police said the crash had happened on the A518 between Haughton and Stafford at about 18:25 GMT on Saturday.

    Mr Myatt, from Gnosall, died at Royal Stoke University Hospital on Sunday as a result of his injuries.

  17. Man in court over 'stun gun disguised as torch'published at 14:10 Greenwich Mean Time 14 January 2019

    An Irish national accused of having an illegal stun gun disguised as a torch has appeared in court after his arrest at Birmingham Airport.

    Thomas Kavanagh, 51, was detained after landing on Saturday, as part of a National Crime Agency (NCA) investigation.

    He had just returned from a family holiday in Mexico, North Staffordshire Magistrates' Court heard earlier.

    Mr Kavanagh, of Sutton Road, Mile Oak, Tamworth, has lived in the UK for more than 15 years and faces a charge of possession of a prohibited item under Section 5 of the Firearms Act.

    He spoke only to confirm his name, date of birth, Irish nationality, and that he understood proceedings.

    He was remanded in custody to appear at Stafford Crown Court on Tuesday.

    A seal pup who was covered in oil is recovering at an RSPCA wildlife centre in Nantwich, Cheshire, after being rescued in Merseyside.

    The underweight seal, named Flax by RSPCA staff, was taken to the Stapeley Grange Wildlife Centre and cleaned.
