  4. Combat knife found near park after teenagers robbedpublished at 18:57 Greenwich Mean Time 14 January 2019

    A large combat knife has been found near a park after police were called to reports of a knife-point robbery.

    West Midlands Police said officers, external were alerted at 22:20 GMT on Saturday to reports of a group of male youths threatening a boy and girl, both aged 15, with a knife in Princess Alice Park, Sutton Coldfield, before fleeing with their mobile phones.

    Four youths were arrested and during a daylight search of the area, officers uncovered a sheathed, serrated-edge knife.

    Two teenagers, aged 15 and 16, both from Birmingham have been charged with two counts of robbery and the younger suspect also faces a charge of cannabis possession.

    Two others, aged 16 and 17, have been released on bail with conditions including an overnight curfew.

    He was found unconscious on Bilton Road, Rugby, by a passer-by who flagged down a police car.

    The arrested teenager, a 16-year-old boy from Rugby, was detained on Sunday on suspicion of being concerned in the supply of class A drugs, and has been released under investigation while enquiries continue.

    The ill boy remains in a critical but stable condition in hospital.

    Birmingham's recycling rate has dropped from 27% to 21% since 2014, figures show.

    It has led to the city council taking on a plastic-free challenge in April for the whole month.

    Councillor Liz Clements is leading the Plastic Free Birmingham Inquiry and at a council meeting last week, ideas raised to help to reduce plastic use included: The installation of water fountains or water refill stations along Broad Street, apps which allow you to scan a can or bottle to find out if it's recyclable and bins which thank the person disposing of rubbish.

    Two men have been seriously hurt in a hit-and-run in Birmingham.

    West Midlands Police said, external the pair were crossing Adderley Road, Saltley, at about 19:30 on Saturday when they were hit by a car.

    A man in his 30s suffered a head injury, while the other - aged 34 - sustained broken bones.

    They remain in a critical but stable condition in hospital.

    Det Sgt Tom Lyons said: "We are particularly keen to hear from anyone who saw a silver Seat Ibiza around the area at the time of the collision and has dash-cam footage.

    "We believe the car would have suffered significant front-end damage so would also ask for anyone who has seen a damaged vehicle like this since Saturday night to contact us as soon as possible."

    A man was attacked by three men after the car in which he was travelling crashed into a wall and stationary vehicles, police said.

    Officers believe the car was chased from Coventry by a white Audi containing the offenders.

    The attacked man, 30, suffered injuries to his back and arm during the incident at about 20:40 in Wolvey Road Bulkington, on Sunday.

    Housing bosses in Wolverhampton are set to discuss plans for 20 new homes on the site of a derelict adventure playground, as part of a drive to combat homelessness in the city.

    The council this week warned private landlords that any homes left empty for long periods of time would be used to provide accommodation for needy families, with houses in Bilston and Pennfields among the latest.

    Alongside the council’s "Empty Properties Strategy", it is anticipated that the continued residential development of suitable empty areas of land will help to drive down the numbers of homeless families and rough sleepers in the city.

    The former Old Fallings Adventure Playground closed in November following repeated episodes of vandalism.
