    New plans have been unveiled for a major development in Stirchley which could bring Aldi and McDonald’s to the area.

    Seven Capital has submitted a proposal to Birmingham City Council to build five new units, including a gym, at Hazelwell Lane near the British Oak pub.

    It is not the first time the vacant 3.75-acre plot has been earmarked for a supermarket, with Tesco linked to the site for a number of years before pulling out in 2017.

    A new supermarket would occupy the biggest unit on the north side of Hazelwell Lane, next to Co-op Funeral Directors. Mock-up images show Aldi branding on the proposed store.

    The charity handed out nearly 7,000 food parcels and said almost a third of those supplies were needed to feed children.

    A 12-month programme to clean every one of Telford's 33,000 gullies is under way.

    To get all the work done, contractors are set to work day and night to clean an average of 128 gullies a day, recording how much silt they contain so that problem-drains can be monitored in the future.

    A surgeon at Royal Stoke Hospital has pleaded guilty to a series of child porn charges.

    Cristian Bogdan, a 42-year-old heart and chest surgeon from Congleton, Cheshire, was arrested after police raided his home in December 2017 and found more than 13,000 child abuse photos, the Crown Prosecution Service said.

    Bogdan pleaded guilty to three counts of making indecent images of children, one count of possessing indecent photographs of children and one count of possessing prohibited images of children.

    He is due to be sentenced at Chester Crown Court on 24 May.

    Port Vale captain Tom Pope says it's important the uncertainty over the ownership of the club is cleared up as soon as possible.

    New jobs could be created in Kidderminster with the construction of a new factory at Silverwood's Business Park, a company says.

    Barton Firtop, which makes filtration products, has bought a 3.6-acre site to build new manufacturing, testing, warehouse and office facilities.

    The firm says it will move across staff from its two sites in Bromsgrove and another in Kingswinford and there will be 100 people working at the new plant, with the possibility of another 50 in the future.

    It said: "Our company currently has space limitations and this problem is compounded by operating between three separate sites."

    A think tank says Telford is "one of the most vulnerable places" in the UK if the country leaves the EU without a trade deal covering goods exports.

    Figures from The Centre for Cities research group suggest 59% of goods exported by businesses in Telford went to EU countries in 2017.

    Its head of policy and research Paul Swinney says while the town is at risk "if [the UK gets] a deal with the EU and it's a goods-only deal, Telford is probably more insulated perhaps than other places in the UK".

    More than 100 cases of modern slavery were identified by officers in the West Midlands police force area last year.

    A campaign to tackle the problem is being launched in Birmingham today.

    The number of potential victims in the UK has increased by 36% since 2017, said the government, with nearly 7,000 cases identified, 117 of which were in the West Midlands.

    The campaign is aimed at workers in healthcare, financial services and employment officers to help them spot signs of abuse.

  15. 'Loving and selfless' woman killed in A38 crashpublished at 16:50 British Summer Time 25 April 2019

    A woman who died in a crash on the A38 in Worcestershire on Monday has been named by police as Gail Lewis from Rubery.

    The 74-year-old died when the car she was travelling in crashed with another vehicle at about 16:00 between Bromsgrove and Junction 5 of the M5.

    She was described by her daughter Michelle as "loving and selfless".

    "Mum devoted so much of her time to caring for other people; she was always putting everyone before herself," she said.

    West Mercia Police are calling for any witnesses to come forward.
