    GPs are warning people to take care in the high temperatures, external over the next couple of days.

    The advice is to drink plenty of water, avoid alcohol and caffeinated drinks, dress appropriately and avoid heavy activity.

  4. 3D aerospace technology 'helping to convict killers'published at 13:23 British Summer Time 18 July 2016

    A collaboration between West Midlands Police and the University of Warwick helped convict Kandyce Downer, who was jailed in May for murdering Keegan Downer.

    The work provides X-rays 43,000 times more detailed than hospital CT scans.

    A force spokesman said 3D models had showed "a history of cruelty" suffered by toddler Keegan Downer, as well as proving to the jury her guardian had failed to get medical assistance for Keegan's broken leg.  

    The toddler had 153 scars and bruises and suffered what police described as "barbaric and evil" treatment.

    Nuneaton golfer Andy Sullivan (pictured) recorded his best ever finish at The Open, finishing one under par, securing him joint 12th on the final leaderboard.

    He finished alongside defending champion Zach Johnson and Matt Southgate, the Essex golfer who conquered testicular cancer.

    The new Transport Secretary Chris Grayling says he does not intend to scrap the high-speed HS2 rail project which is set to run through the West Midlands, Staffordshire and Cheshire.

    The initial plan is for a new line from London to Birmingham, with later extensions to Manchester and Leeds including a key staging post in Crewe.

    The Stop HS2 campaign group had called on Mr Grayling to urgently review the project on cost grounds and the effect on towns and cities near the route.

    But Mr Grayling told BBC Radio 4's The World This Weekend: "I have no plans to back away from the HS2 project."

    Henrick Stenson's caddy said he had the "best seat in the house" to watch the Swede's victory at Royal Troon.

    Gareth Lord, who plays at Hearsall golf course in Coventry, said the victory hadn't sunk in yet.

    "I'll remember this for a very long time, no question," he said.

    "Everyone calls him the iceman, I can tell you sometimes he's not, but he certainly was today."

    There are calls for a by-election in the Bablake ward of Coventry after the incumbent councillor resigned from the Conservatives, but pledged to stay on as an independent.

    Glen Williams quit the Tory party after saying non-English speakers were "taking over" the country and should "go home".

    George Sands, branch chair of Coventry Unison, called the councillor's comments a "disgrace to our city" and the "honourable thing to do" would be to hold a by-election.

    The councillor needed to "reflect on the relationship between political power and responsibility", he said.
