A report into Coventry's Co-op store says the building is probably the most compete and unaltered post-war shopfront in the city centre.
Councillors are being recommended to add the store to the list of buildings of local architectural or historical interest.
The report says no planning applications have been received for the site although prospective purchasers have expressed their desire to demolish the building to erect two 12-storey towers of student accommodation.
