  13. 'Nudge, nudge' in the clink, clinkpublished at 16:38 British Summer Time 15 September 2016

    Peter Wilson
    BBC Midlands Today Special Correspondent

Nudge Theory - a trial project from West Midlands Police - uses small psychological boosts and suggestions in the hope of helping criminals avoid reoffending.

In addition to supportive messages on cell walls, the interventions include sending letters to known offenders on key birthdays, their 18th or 21st, suggesting it's time to rethink their future.

The reoffending rates of detainees exposed to the cell graffiti will be compared to those who stay in regular cells, to gauge any behaviour change.

Nudge theory has been used across the world in different ways. At a Dutch airport, flies were painted in the middle of urinals to encourage men to take better aim.

  18. A 'nudge' in the right direction?published at 14:40 British Summer Time 15 September 2016

    Peter Wilson
    BBC Midlands Today Special Correspondent

West Midlands Police says it's trialing a new project that uses psychology to try to cut crime - it's called Nudge Theory.

In some cases it’s just simple things to "nudge" offenders in the right direction. At Solihull Police Station, cell blocks have a supportive message from an ex-criminal written on the walls.
