  3. Church to be reopened contains 'historically important' muralpublished at 13:10 British Summer Time 10 October 2016

    The Coventry church to be reopened to worshipers after 45 years contains a 1960s mural recognised as historically important by English Heritage.

    The mural, on a wall inside St Mark's Church, was painted in 1963 by German-born Jew Hans Feibusch, who fled from Nazis in 1933.

    The mural's recognition means it will have protected status.

    The Bishop of Coventry said they hoped to reopen the church to parishioners next year.

    A man has been remanded in custody charged with the abduction of a schoolgirl in Staffordshire 15 years ago.

    Arnold Baxter, 72, of Bath Street, Rugby, Warwickshire is accused of kidnap and indecent assault after an incident in Barton-under-Needwood in 2001.

    He is due to appear at Stafford Crown Court on 11 November.

  6. Critically injured footballer recovering well after match collisionpublished at 11:49 British Summer Time 10 October 2016

    A footballer critically hurt when he and another player collided during a match at the weekend is recovering well in hospital, his club says.

    Rugby Town says defender Elliot Palmer is hoping to move out of the critical care unit after crashing into another player during a match on Saturday.

    The player suffered three broken ribs and bleeding on a kidney and his liver during the match against local rivals Bedworth United.

  7. Coventry church to reopen targeting a student congregatonpublished at 11:44 British Summer Time 10 October 2016

    A city centre church in Coventry will open its doors to parishioners again next year, 45 years after closing.

    St Mark's Church, in Stoney Stanton road, Swanswell, served as a place of worship for 100 years before being closed in 1972.

    The Bishop of Coventry said the church would be relaunched as a "city centre resource church" to target a younger congregation. 

    The Right Reverend Christopher Cocksworth said: "We want to reach out, particularly to the student community and people in their 20s and 30s, a community which is often distanced from the life of the Church."

  8. Final parade for battalion colourspublished at 11:25 British Summer Time 10 October 2016

    The colours of the now disbanded 2nd Battalion of the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers were paraded in Warwick.

    Troops marched through the town for the annual veterans' parade before a service at St Mary's Church, where the colours were laid to rest.

    Wasps have revealed flanker Sam Jones will be out for about five months with the broken leg and ankle damage suffered at England's training camp.

    The uncapped 24-year-old was injured during a judo session with Maro Itoje.

    England's training sessions in Brighton have been criticised by Premiership Rugby, with the umbrella body for the top-flight clubs unhappy with the timing and intensity of the camp, during which several players sustained injuries.  

  10. Warwickshire boroughs among type 2 diabetes hotspotspublished at 10:47 British Summer Time 10 October 2016

    Nuneaton and Bedworth and North Warwickshire have been named as two of the top 10 areas in England for type 2 diabetes prescriptions.

    Prescriptions for medicines to treat the disease have risen by a third in England in the past five years; from 26 million to 35 million a year, according to NHS data.

    Diabetes UK said it was a good sign the disease was being diagnosed.

    The next step was getting people to "manage their condition better", it said.

  12. Rail lines reopen after bridge repairpublished at 10:01 British Summer Time 10 October 2016

    Lines between Stratford-upon-Avon and Birmingham Snow Hill have reopened after being closed for the replacement of a railway bridge near Henley-in-Arden.

    The £2m upgrade, on a road beneath the line at Blunts Green, Warwickshire, required a full closure of the line over the weekend.

    Police say a motorcyclist was involved in an accident on the M6 southbound earlier between J3a, at the M6 Toll, and J3, for the A444 (Nuneaton).

    Highways England says the collision has been cleared to the hard shoulder and traffic released, but there are long delays in the area.

    The number of children being arrested in the West Midlands has fallen by 62% in five years. 

    Research by the Howard League for Penal Reform, external shows during 2015, police made 5,438 arrests of boys and girls aged 17 and under.

    In 2010 there were 14,387.

    Across England and Wales there was a reduction of 58% over the five years. 

     The charity said limiting child arrests prevented a "downward spiral into crime and custody."

    The West Midlands MEP Bill Etheridge has announced he will stand for the UKIP leadership again. 

    One of the favourites, Stephen Woolfe, has now been discharged from hospital after an altercation with a fellow UKIP MEP in Strasbourg. 

    With question marks being raised over whether Mr Woolfe can continue to seek the party leadership, Mr Etheridge says he can "no longer" support his campaign and will now run himself.
