The Labour MEP Sion Simon has formally launched his campaign to be elected West Midlands "Metro Mayor" in just over three months.
He told an invited audience at a training centre in Wolverhampton that, if elected, he would fight for fairer Government funding for the West Midlands, compared with Scotland, Wales and even other regions of England.

A rare Italian table top, which until last year graced the interior of Warwick Castle, is included on a list of "national treasure" artworks that have left the country.
The £3.5m Grimani pietre dure table top went abroad in 2016, despite the government placing a temporary export bar, external on it so a UK buyer could be found.
Originally from Florence, it was brought to England by the 3rd Earl of Warwick in the 19th Century as part of his decoration of the castle.
Over the past five years, 41 "national treasure" artworks with a combined value of around £278m have gone abroad.
Plans for a major expansion of Jaguar Land Rover's plant in Coventry, external have been given the go-ahead by the City Council.
The firm intends to build a new engine design plant on 60 acres south of its existing site at Whitley.
In a statement the company said it was "delighted" at the decision.
The site is an expansion of the existing research and testing facilities as the company develops new battery powered and hybrid technologies.

An investigation into the use of force used by police officers against a member of the public has been launched by the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC).
It follows an incident where a man was treated for a knee injury after he was arrested for motoring offences in Victoria Street last month.
He was eventually released without charge.
The IPCC would like to speak to anyone who may have witnessed the incident, near the Hillfields Community Centre at around 02:10 on 4 December.

A man died and another was injured in a collision between a van and a car on the A429 yesterday, says the Ambulance service., external
The crash happened just after 17:15, south of Ettington.
The driver of the car died at the scene, and the van driver, a man believed to be in his 40s, was taken to hospital suffering a suspected broken pelvis.

Coventry people have joined those nationwide who are unfurling banners on bridges ahead of Donald Trump's inauguration.
The gesture is being made by those aligning themselves to a movement called Bridges Not Walls.
Participants are making their peaceful pledge - to "build bridges, not walls" - following an election campaign from Mr Trump that featured controversial statements about Muslim and Mexican people, plus an episode in which he appeared to mock a disabled reporter.

DCS Group is moving its headquarters to Banbury, creating a potential 220 jobs.
The company, which is behind brands such as Gillette, Colgate and Unilever, will move from Stratford-upon-Avon to the former Hella building on Noral Way.
Lynn Pratt, Cherwell District Council's lead member for estates and the economy, said: "We are happy to have helped facilitate this move, which will return the former Hella building to use.
"Cherwell has resisted pressure to allow housing to be built on the site, insisting that it be used to provide employment."
Denys Shortt, founder and CEO of DCS, said: "We are very grateful to Cherwell District Council for their help having found our new site in Banbury.
"They have been very positive regarding the jobs that we will bring to the area and fast to respond to planning applications and any queries we have had."

A man's been arrested on suspicion of robbery after shop staff were twice threatened at gunpoint in the county.
The first robbery saw cash and cigarettes taken from the BP shop on Stratford Road, Warwick, when staff were threatened with a firearm, police say., external
In the second, staff were threatened with a gun and cash was stolen from the Heart of England Co-Op on Church Road, Long Itchington.
A 29-year old man from Leamington Spa has been released on police bail.
The worker who lost a leg after vehicles crashed at Jaguar Land Rover's (JLR) plant in Solihull says "it is stressful having to rely on others".
Mark Widnall's leg was crushed in the collision in February 2015, according to union Unite whose legal services team has been fighting for compensation on his behalf. On Thursday, JLR was fined £900,000 in connection with the crash.
Unite says Mr Widnall, 59, from Coventry, has had to move house to accommodate his needs after his injured leg was amputated above the knee.
He said: “This is the first stage [JLR's fine] in drawing a line under my accident but I have been left with a prosthetic limb which means I can’t do things I used to do, like going out dancing."
