    The first female Director General of MI5 and the creator of the Teletubbies are among those being awarded honorary degrees at the University of Warwick.

    Dame Stella Rimington, who once worked as an archivist at the Worcestershire County Record Office, joined MI5 in 1967.

     Also honoured is Anne Wood who founded Ragdoll Productions in Stratford-upon-Avon which, in addition to Teletubbies, was behind Rosie and Jim and In The Night Garden.    

  2. Prison sentences for off-road bike pairpublished at 17:22 Greenwich Mean Time 19 January 2017

    Two men have been given prison sentences for driving off-road bikes through the streets, external of Rugby, police say.

    According to the Warwickshire force, the pair, aged 18 and 19 and from Rugby, were seen on CCTV.

    They pleaded guilty to a range of motoring offences committed in October last year.

    The men were sentenced to six and eight months in prison respectively - each sentence suspended for two years.

    A teenager is being treated for leg and chest injuries after a collision in Leamington Spa, says the ambulance service.

    The pedestrian was hit by a vehicle on Villiers Street just after 02:00 .

    Coventry Rugby Club has ruled out any prospect of a ground-sharing deal at Butts Park Arena with the Sky Blues as long as hedge fund Sisu are in charge of the football club.

    The rugby club says the reason it can't enter into any relationship with Sisu is because of the "strength of feeling against them" in the city at the moment. 

    Fans groups and the city's daily newspaper are calling on Sisu to sell up and go. 

    In a statement, the rugby club says its own standing and reputation in the city would be damaged if it did a deal with the Sky Blues' owners.

    One person had to be cut free from a car after two vehicles collided and left the road on Fosse Way near Moreton Morrell, says the fire service.

    One casualty was taken to hospital after the crash at about 09:07 this morning.

    A Jaguar Land Rover worker lost his leg and two others were injured in a health and safety breach which has cost the company nearly £1m in fines.

    After an investigation by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), the company was found guilty at Birmingham Crown Court, and was yesterday fined £900,000 and ordered to pay £49,868 in costs. 

    The HSE said in February 2015 a delivery driver lost control of a car causing a four-car-shunt at the company's Lode Lane plant in Solihull, trapping a worker.

    HSE inspector John Glynn said, external the worker's "life-changing injuries" were completely avoidable and it was "only good fortune" that prevented a fatal accident.

    Schools in Coventry and Nuneaton are among 282 secondary schools in England that are deemed to be failing as they haven't met a new set of national standards.

    From this year, schools are being judged by measures that take greater account of pupil progress and their basic ability rather than just raw results.  

    Grace Academy and Ernesford Grange Community Academy  in Coventry along with Nuneaton Academy are among those named in the government's data as under-performing.

    Police say they found a samurai sword in a car they pulled over in Leamington Spa.

    Two men and a teenager from Coventry have been arrested on suspicion of possession of an offensive weapon in a public place. 

    A 23-year-old and a 16-year-old are being held along with a 34-year-old who is also suspected of possessing cannabis.

    The car was stopped at the junction of Clarendon Avenue and Kenilworth Road at about 03:00.

    Police say it's unclear whether the car in which they were travelling is linked to an earlier collision in High Street, Leamington Spa, which left a man in his 40s with head, leg and arm wounds.

    Coventry City have warned that fans anti-owner protests could damage the football club and jeopardise a possible move to the home of Coventry Rugby, Butts Park Arena.

    The club published a statement after reports Coventry Rugby had indicated they won't deal with owners Sisu because of the antipathy towards them. 

    The football club insist they remain hopeful that they can continue to explore the possibility of a ground share at Butts Park Arena.

    A lorry driver has told police he was robbed at gunpoint in an A5 lay-by in Witherley this morning, according to the Warwickshire force., external

    The driver said he was approached by a man holding a gun who joined two others in stealing two pallets of whisky from the back of the vehicle before fleeing in a a white Mercedes van in the direction of Nuneaton and Hinckley.

    It happened at about 03:00 in the lay-by opposite Rock Caravans.

    The city council has agreed a £500,000 loan to refurbish Plas Dol-y-Moch but the charity which runs the centre also needs to raise £250,000 by September.
