  12. Male nursing students targeted in gender imbalance schemepublished at 17:24 British Summer Time 4 August 2017

    A £30,000 fund is to be used to target male students and encourage them into the field of healthcare.

    According to UCAS data , externalmen account for just 10% of the total nursing students at universities in the UK, said Coventry University, which is running the scheme, with 2,800 men accepted compared to 26,000 women last year.

    "While there’s lots being done nationally - and at Coventry - to encourage women into sciences and engineering", said Rob James from the University, "we hope this new initiative will lead the way in addressing the persistent low proportion of men working in many healthcare professions.”

    Funded by the National Express Foundation Group, external, the bursary will give 10 men £1,000 in each year of their degree.

    The man, believed to be in his 20s, is in hospital in a critical condition after the incident on Holbrook Lane near to the Unicorn working men's club, Coventry, at 23:45.

    A teenage boy was left with injuries to his face after being attacked in a Nuneaton park last night, police say.

    Officers were called to George Eliot Memorial Park in Raveloe Drive at 19:00, following reports of an assault on the boy, who was with two other teenagers.

    He was taken to University Hospital in Coventry and treated for the injuries, not believed to be life-threatening.

    A new condom distribution service which is free for those who register, has been launched in North Warwickshire.

    The C-Card scheme allows 13 to 19-year-olds living in Atherstone, Nuneaton or North Warwickshire the opportunity to get free condoms and sexual health advice.

    Teenagers need to sign up for the confidential service, external, run by Coventry & Warwickshire Partnership NHS Trust, then use a key fob to get free condoms at a number of chemists across the area.
