    Staff at the McColl's store on Stanley Court in Sydenham were threatened by two men wielding a knife at around 17:00. They grabbed the cash from the till and fled.

    Police think the robbery is linked to an earlier attack on a McColl's store in Warwick, but the would-be robbers left there empty-handed.

  2. Delayed holidaymaker finally gets homepublished at 09:27 British Summer Time 3 August 2017

    A holidaymaker from Coventry is back home after his flight from Crete was delayed by more than 24 hours.

    Paul Donaldson was initially told he faced a two-hour delay to return to Gatwick on Wednesday, which then increased to more than 18 hours.

    The airline Small Planet and his tour operator Olympic Holidays have both apologised for what they described as "technical issues."

    The plane eventually touched-down at Gatwick at 05:30 this morning.

    The UK's first black Shakespearean actor is to be honoured with the unveiling of a blue plaque in Coventry.

    Ira Aldridge was given the job of manager at Coventry Theatre after impressing the people of the city with his acting during a tour in 1828.

    He toured the English provinces extensively and stayed in Coventry for a few months, during which time he gave a number of speeches on the evils of slavery.

    When he left, people inspired by his speeches went to the county hall and petitioned for its abolition.

    Volunteers have stunned a mother and son by transforming their house in DIY SOS-style makeover.

    Tommy Lloyd is 11 and has Muscular Dystrophy, a muscle wasting disease and has problems using the stairs.

    He and his his mum Hayley, of Rugby, were recently given a grant to have a lift installed in their house.

    An appeal for help with some decorating after the installation led to a complete house makeover.

    Whitefriars housing association says it is "considering" installing sprinkler systems in Coventry tower blocks that don't have them already.

    The group, which owns and manages most of the social housing stock in Coventry, was responding to fire safety concerns raised by tower block residents at a meeting held in Hillfields last night.

    The organisation says its "confident" in meeting the "highest standards" of fire safety, with blocks being inspected every week and detailed fire assessments carried out at least once a year.

    A good Samaritan is being sought by police in Leamington investigating an assault in the town.

    A man in his 50s was attacked and robbed on the canal towpath between Tachbrook Road and McDonalds on 21 July. Two men knocked him unconscious and stole cash.

    He was helped by a passing woman and it's her police want to speak to.

  14. Threatened butterfly species spotted in Stratford-upon-Avonpublished at 17:38 British Summer Time 2 August 2017

    A "very rare" butterfly whose species was hit by Dutch Elm disease in the 70s has been spotted in Stratford-upon-Avon.

    A White Letter Hairstreak butterfly was seen on the Stratford-upon-Avon recreation ground, during the nationwide butterfly count, feeding from the nectar of wildflowers.

    Eminent lepidopterist Richard Lamb, managing director at the town's butterfly farm, has verified the sighting.

    The butterfly usually flies around the tops of trees, particularly elms, but occasionally comes down to ground level to nectar on flowers, the farm said.

    The United Kingdom Butterfly Monitoring Scheme, external said there have been "significant declines" in numbers at monitored sites since 1976.

    The ability to increase a convict's sentence if it's too light is an important part of the justice system, the solicitor general has told BBC News.

    Robert Buckland's comments come as figures show more inmates in the West Midlands had their jail terms increased last year than anywhere else in England and Wales.

    The MP says cases where an unduly lenient sentences has been passed are becoming rarer.

    "With the use of sentencing guidelines, you're getting a greater consistency across the piece from judges when it comes to criminal sentencing," he added.

    The Attorney General's Office said latest figures revealed that 141 terms were added to in England and Wales in 2016 under the Unduly Lenient Sentence scheme, up by 39 from 2015.

    Anyone can request that certain prison spells be increased within 28 days of the original sentencing.
