    The former head of local policing in Coventry joined colleagues in cycling almost 200 miles in remembrance of officers who have died on duty.

    Chief Inspector Kerry Blakeman, from West Midlands Police, completed the ride in memory of his father who died on duty in 1966.

    The riders, who set off on Friday, finished at the National Memorial Arboretum at Alrewas in Staffordshire for an annual service of remembrance.

    An appeal was launched in May for public donations towards a national memorial at the arboretum to police officers killed in the line of duty, in light of PC Keith Palmer's killing outside the Houses of Parliament in March.

    A formal offer to buy Oakfield Recreation Ground has been submitted by Rugby Borough Council, it says., external

    The land is owned by the Heart of England Cooperative Society and, until recently, was leased and maintained by the council as a park.

    However the Co-op fenced off the site in June last year and, according to the council, refused to enter discussions on a new long-term lease after being turned down for planning permission to build houses on the site.

    The Co-op withdrew an appeal against 2016's planning permission rejection in April this year. A council spokesman says the local authority understands the society may now be willing to sell the site.

    Three people, including a seven-year-old girl, were taken to hospital following a head-on crash on the A46 yesterday.

    The 18-year-old driver of a Ford Fiesta was airlifted to hospital in Coventry after being cut free from the vehicle and the seven year old was taken by land ambulance to Birmingham Children's Hospital.

    A 34 year old was also taken to hospital in Coventry suffering a head injury.

    The Stratford Bypass was closed for a time between Bishopton and Alcester after the collision which happened at about 17:30.
