    Bermudan film star Earl Cameron was the guest of honour at the unveiling of a blue plaque commemorating the city's links to African American actor Ira Aldridge, who died 150 years ago.

    Mr Cameron, who will be 100 later this month, was trained by Aldridge's daughter Amanda, and has been a key part of the campaign to honour the country's first black Shakespearean actor.

    Worcestershire Rapids resume their T20 Blast campaign tomorrow against the Birmingham Bears at Edgbaston.

    After a slow start to the 20-over format, Worcestershire have found some form and will be aiming to continue that tomorrow as they will then host Northamptonshire Steelbacks on Saturday.

    Director of cricket Steve Rhodes admits the side hadn't quite nailed key areas of the game early on.

    The Sky Blues manager says the future of striker George Thomas should have been resolved by now.

    Thomas is out of contract at Coventry and has been linked to a move to Premier League club Leicester City but the transfer has yet to be confirmed.

    At a press conference today the manager admitted to being frustrated that a decision hasn't been made.

    Actor Robert Hardy, best known for roles in the Harry Potter films and TV series All Creatures Great And Small, has died aged 91, his family says.

    The former Rugby School pupil had a career spanning more than 70 years in theatre and television.

    He started his career with the Shakespeare Memorial Company in Stratford-upon-Avon and he most recently played Cornelius Fudge, the Minister for Magic, in the Harry Potter films.

    Three arrests have now been made in connection with the story we brought you earlier about armed robberies in Warwickshire on Tuesday.

    The first incident was an attempted robbery at McColls on The Precinct in Warwick, and the second was at a Leamington Spa McColls store, where a large amount of cash was taken.

    Two men aged 20 and 22 from Warwick and a 29-year-old man from Leamington Spa have all been arrested on suspicion of robbery.

    A 12-year-old Coventry schoolboy has been named Young Achiever of the Year at the National English Asian Business Awards.

    Abz, who runs a dessert van in the city, is the youngest ever recipient of the award, said Bablake School , externalwhere he's a pupil.

    Those who purchased in the early bird period will also receive a paper ticket for the Blackburn Carabao Cup game separately in the post.

    It says there was an issue as a result of the link between Ticketmaster and the company formatting the cards.

    The issue has now been resolved but paper tickets are being sent out to affected fans to "alleviate concerns".

    A spate of distraction burglaries in Coventry appear to be linked, police say., external

    Elderly people were targeted by a three-strong gang claiming to have been sent to carry out gutter maintenance - but twice went on to steal cash from inside homes.

    On one other occasion they demanded payment from the homeowner, who handed over £80.

    Both happened on 26 July in the Wood End and Earlsdon areas of the city.

    The first black man ever to manage a British theatre is being honoured at a ceremony in Coventry today.

    Ira Aldridge was just 20 years old when he became the manager of Coventry Theatre in 1828.

    A blue plaque is being unveiled at the city's upper precinct to remember the actor, whose work inspired the city to petition parliament to abolish slavery.

    Cash was stolen from the One Stop on Albion Street at around 22:06 after two men threatened staff with knives.

    A 26-year-old man from Leamington Spa has been arrested on suspicion of robbery.

    Plans that could see more than two thirds of children's centres in Warwickshire shut could be changed, according to the councillor in charge of children's services.

    Around 40 children's services workers and parents attended a public meeting on the subject in Nuneaton yesterday.

    A consultation is under way on plans to go from 39 children's centres for 0-5 year-olds to 12 family hubs for 0-19 year olds.

    The remaining 27 children's centres face closure if community groups or the private sector cannot take them over.

    "We are listening. I’ve changed my mind a couple of times throughout this consultation process about locations of various centres", said Councillor Jeff Morgan.

    "It is quite likely that the final outcome will be very different to the proposed model," he added.

    The 25-year-old from Stratford-upon-Avon doesn't have happy memories of the London stadium after pulling up injured at the 2012 Olympics.

    He's been in outstanding form this season though and won the European indoor title in March.

  15. Actress Holly Matthews' tribute to husband Ross Blair passes £10,000published at 10:50 British Summer Time 3 August 2017

    A fundraising effort for the hospice that cared for a 32-year-old man in his final days has surpassed its target five times over.

    Actress Holly Matthews is raising money for Myton Hospice in memory of Ross Blair.

    The son of ex-Aston Villa and Coventry City player Andy Blair died at the Warwick hospice on Saturday.

    Ms Matthews has so far raised more than £10,000 for the charity, after setting a target of £2,000, which the hospice called "exceptionally amazing".

    Myton's chief executive Ruth Freeman said as a charity they rely heavily on peoples' generosity and "Holly had done more to raise the profile of the work we do than anything we could say ourselves".

    "Her continuing efforts to raise funds have been inspirational. She has touched the hearts of all of us here at Myton."
