  5. Coventry 'vibrant and bustling', MP tells City of Culture debatepublished at 17:49 British Summer Time 5 September 2017

    The entire West Midlands region would benefit if Coventry won the competition to be the UK's next City of Culture in 2021, parliament has heard.

    The city is on the shortlist to win the title, after its initial bid was submitted in the spring.

    Leading a debate in Parliament, the Coventry South Labour MP Jim Cunningham said he couldn't think of a better city for the award.

    A man detectives describe as a "dangerous sexual offender" has been jailed after admitting historic child sexual offences in Bedworth, police have revealed., external

    Robert Edmondson, 48, of Windsor Street, Coventry, pleaded guilty to four counts of indecent assault on a teenage girl in Bedworth in the early 2000s.

    Appearing at Warwick Crown Court on Wednesday 30 August he was sentenced to a total of five years and 11 months in prison, and ordered to sign on to the sex offenders register.

    He also pleaded guilty to failing to surrender to court bail in February 2017.

    These pictures show the aftermath of a two-car crash that left one vehicle in the wall of a house.

    The driver of the black Mercedes, a man believed to be in his 60s, was treated for head and hip injuries and taken to University Hospital in Coventry.

    A woman driving the second car was treated for shock at the scene, and taken to hospital as a precaution, the ambulance service said.

    The area around Lockhurst Lane and Durbar Avenue was closed for a time after the collision, at around 14:20, but has since reopened.

    Thieves followed the van into Moorlands Avenue at around 18:30 on 1 September, and made off with the vehicle as soon as the driver left it to make a parcel delivery.

    The driver only suffered minor injuries and the van was later located near to the town's cricket club.

    Derbyshire Police said they're looking for witnesses to come forward after a fight broke out at the roundabout next to the Donkey Derby pub on Sheffield Road just before kick-off.

    A police spokesman said three men from the Chesterfield area were arrested but have been released under investigation.

  11. Car crashes into Coventry housepublished at 16:48 British Summer Time 5 September 2017

    A house has been damaged and two people taken to hospital after two cars collided on Lockhurst Lane in Coventry earlier this afternoon.

    Police say they were called to the incident involving a black Mercedes and a red Ford Focus shortly after 14:20.

    Fire and ambulance services were also called to the scene.

    No arrests were made, police said, and no one was seriously injured.

  12. Child sex robots 'will happen' says police chiefpublished at 16:32 British Summer Time 5 September 2017

    Child robots designed for people to have sex with "will happen", a senior police officer has warned at a meeting in Warwickshire.

    Addressing the Police Superintendents' annual conference in Stratford-upon-Avon, Chief Constable Simon Bailey suggested that it was only a matter of time before there were virtual reality videos of child abuse.

    He said forces were "struggling" to keep up with the pace of technological change and a "staggering" number of reports of abuse.

    Referring to recent cases involving men prosecuted for importing child sex dolls into Britain, he said: "How long is it before we have a child sex robot? Trust me it will happen."

  13. 'Violent' murderers have sentences increasedpublished at 15:41 British Summer Time 5 September 2017

    Two men convicted of "violently" murdering a "defenceless" man have had their sentences increased after an application by the Attorney General, Jeremy Wright MP.

    Stephen Weeks, 48, of Hugh Road, Coventry, and 19-year-old Drew Thorpe, were found guilty of murdering Lee Brooks during an incident at Weeks' house in August last year.

    At Warwick Crown Court in May Weeks was sentenced to a minimum term of 16 years and Thorpe was jailed for at least 12 years.

    At the Court of Appeal today Lord Justice Davis increased that to 20 years for Weeks, and Thorpe will now have to serve 12 years before he can apply for parole.

    Senior prosecutor at the original trial, Anjuli Shergill said the attack on Brooks had been "violent and sustained".

    "The victim ended up with severe head injuries to his head from which he would later die."

  14. Research 'stolen by hackers from UK universities'published at 14:49 British Summer Time 5 September 2017

    Cyber criminals are targeting British universities, including the University of Warwick, to steal scientific, engineering, medical and defence research - according to a report in The Times., external

    In the past year there were more than 1,100 cyber security breaches, including unauthorised access of accounts and machines at the university, the paper reports.

    Professor Carsten Maple, director of cyber security research at Warwick told the newspaper that research could be stolen and passed on to unscrupulous governments.

  16. New car sales fall for fifth monthpublished at 13:48 British Summer Time 5 September 2017

    British new car registrations fell for the fifth month in a row in August, a car industry body has said.

    Sales fell 6.4% to 76,433 vehicles, according to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) with demand for diesel cars slumping by more than 20%.

    Jaguar and Land Rover saw 565 cars roll of forecourts down from 722 last August - while 1,512 Land Rovers left showrooms compared to 1,574 in August 2016.

    But Chris Bosworth, director of strategy at Close Brothers Motor Finance, says August's fall in new car sales was "expected", as car buyers are waiting for new registration plates to come in.

    Edgbaston is set to host seven days of major match cricket next year - England’s international T20 against Australia, the first Test against India and T20 Blast Finals Day.

    England will face Australia on Wednesday 27 June, the first Test against India will start on Wednesday 1 August and T20 Blast Finals Day will be on Saturday 15 September 2018.

    Warwickshire, external chief executive Neil Snowball said: "Hosting the first match of the high summer Test series was previously a regular event at Edgbaston, and we are delighted to see this return for 2018 and hope that it can continue for the 2019 Ashes series and beyond.

    “We’ve not hosted an International T20 since 2014, so to host the only fixture between England and Australia is a good result for Edgbaston and it’s certainly an occasion where we will have to consider increasing our capacity again with a temporary stand."

    Tickets for the 2018 programme of major matches at Edgbaston will go on sale to club members from 11 September with the remaining allocation released on general sale from 10:00 BST on 10 October.

    England will host Australia in six limited-overs matches in 2018, in between Test series against Pakistan and India.
