    Flags across Coventry and Warwickshire will be lowered to half mast to remember the anniversary of the attack on the World Trade Center in New York.

    Warwickshire Fire and Rescue Services tweeted it was remembering the 343 workers from the New York City Fire Department who died.

    One of the last major outbreaks of polio in the UK will be remembered at an event in Coventry later.

    More than 100 people contracted the disease in the epidemic 60 years ago.

    Dr Gareth Millward, a historian of medicine, says at the time of the Coventry outbreak a vaccine was available "but unfortunately they weren't able to get it out in time to help the people that really needed it".

    One Last Push, a campaign group aiming to eradicate the disease worldwide, is holding the event at the Transport Museum, external to reach patients, health workers and staff who helped to contain the epidemic in 1957.

    Jack Reacher author Lee Child has returned to his Birmingham roots - and revealed a childhood fight found its way into one of his Jack Reacher novels.

    The 62-year-old was born in Coventry, but grew up in Handsworth Wood as Jim Grant.

    Now the Aston Villa supporter can look back on a stellar literary career that has seen 100 million Jack Reacher books sold around the world.

    On BBC Inside Out West Midlands on Monday, at 19:30 BST on BBC One, he tells presenter Mary Rhodes that memories of a fight he had with a group of bullies was written into one his books - and also featured in a Jack Reacher film starring Tom Cruise.

    Best-selling thriller writer Lee Child has described the moment he stepped in to save a New York taxi driver from a drunk passenger.

    The Coventry-born author, real name Jim Grant, said the offender ended up "horizontal on the sidewalk".

    His revelation came during a visit to Birmingham, where he grew up.

    The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning, running from 20:00 tomorrow until 10:00 on Wednesday.

    It says the winds could get up to 75mph in exposed places and that it's likely to lead to longer travel times and even power cuts.

    Wasps boss, Dai Young, said the team's winning scoreline didn't truly reflect the game against Worcester yesterday and admitted the hosts deserved a losing point.

    The visitors were made to fight hard before two late tries earned victory in the Midlands derby at Sixways stadium.

    Worcester's defeat came at a further cost, with the loss of prop Nick Schonert to a suspected broken ankle and another concussion blow for the returning Tom Heathcote.

    Hundreds of people attended an event to mark the death of Lady Godiva, Countess of Mercia, 950 years ago.

    According to legend, Godiva rode naked on horseback through Coventry in protest against high taxes.

    A civic procession made its way to the statue of Godiva on her horse, followed by Pru Porretta as Godiva, schools, community groups and residents.

    Godiva, who died on 10 September 1067, was married to Leofric, the Earl of Mercia and Lord of Coventry.

  12. Lightning strikes church in Ilmingtonpublished at 09:24 British Summer Time 11 September 2017

    The church in Ilmington was struck by lightning on Saturday, said Warwickshire Fire and Rescue service.

    Crews from Stratford-upon-Avon were called to the scene at around 18:45 to inspect the building and cordon it off from the public.

    The fire service said a local builder had been called in by the owner to carry out works on the site.

  13. Leamington Spa road shut 'after factory ammonia leak'published at 08:49 British Summer Time 11 September 2017

    A resident living near the scene of an ammonia leak in Leamington Spa says she's concerned it took fire crews more than an hour to respond.

    Part of Tachbrook Road in the town was closed after reports of a strong chemical smell in the area on Saturday.

    Diane Drinkwater, who lives nearby, said she initially made a call to the fire service at around 17:50, but was told officers wouldn't be attending the scene unless called by environmental health officers.

    "It must have been around 19:15 when they eventually came out," she said.

    The force defended the delay and said the risk to the public was "very low" and there were not expected to be any ill effects.

    With the information that engineers were on site working, unless we were specifically called to a chemical leak we wouldn't make an attendance. We took a subsequent call at just after 19:00 from the police to an unidentified strong chemical smell, and at that point we made an immediate response."
