    An eviction of travellers from outside a Nuneaton school is under way, said police.

    The council, which owns the site on The Dingle, in the town, "requested police assistance to resolve the situation", said Ch Inspr Dafydd Goddard.

    "The decision was made based on a number of factors, including the disruption to the local community due to the proximity of the encampment to a local school", he said.

    Camp Hill Primary has been closed until further notice.

    Animal rescue officers called to deal with a lizard at a house in Coventry made a surprising discovery.

    “It was around seven inches long and about two inches wide. It was protruding from the edge of the bed and it wasn’t moving at all," said RSPCA officer Vic Hurr.

    "As it wasn’t very light, I got out my torch to see better and that’s when I realised it wasn’t a lizard at all… it was a pink stripy sock."

    “I advised the young girl whose bedroom it was to tidy her room and to take care of her socks, but not before reminding her that another one will turn up soon, as they are usually in pairs," she added.

    BBC documentary-makers are calling for people to take part in in an event at Coventry Cathedral celebrating the power of the Moon.

    Collaborating with the Festival of Imagineers and the Museum of the Moon, they're asking for 100 people, who love the Moon or may have lunar tales, to take part in the filming of the show called Wonders of the Moon.

    Efforts to evict a group of travellers from land outside a Nuneaton school goes to court today.

    The borough council is applying to move them on after they set up camp on the Dingle near Camp Hill Primary.

    The school has been closed until further notice.

    A message on the school website said the decision had been taken to "safeguard our pupils, staff and families".

  5. Students start at Sir James Dyson's engineering universitypublished at 09:04 British Summer Time 14 September 2017

    The first students are starting a four-year engineering degree at the Dyson Institute of Engineering and Technology.

    The £15m institute, set up by Sir James Dyson, is based at Dyson's campus, in Wiltshire, and is a partnership with the University of Warwick.

    More than 850 people applied for 25 positions, so the firm increased its intake to 33 due to the "exceptionally high-calibre of the candidates".

    Lord Bhattacharyya, chairman of the Warwick Manufacturing Group at the University of Warwick, said he wanted to help "develop a pool of talent" with the Dyson partnership.

    The Prime Minister Theresa May says the Commonwealth Games could present "a unique opportunity for the West Midlands".

    Birmingham won the right to be named the UK's perferred bidder for the games and now goes up against Kuala Lumpur to stage the event.

    If successful, Coventry's Ricoh Arena will host the netball competition.

    About 750 victims of rogue breast surgeon Ian Paterson are to be paid compensation from a new £37m fund.

    Private healthcare firm Spire has agreed to pay £27.2m, with £10m coming from Paterson's insurers and the Heart of England NHS Trust.

    Paterson was found guilty of 17 counts of wounding with intent in April after a trial at Nottingham Crown Court.

    In August, he had his 15-year jail term increased to 20 years after the Appeal Court ruled his term was too lenient.

    The payments concern patients treated at private Spire Healthcare hospitals in the West Midlands, who Paterson worked for when he carried out hundreds of botched operations.
