A Coventry shopkeeper has lost his licence to sell alcohol after being caught selling illegal cigarettes to a child, the city council say.

Trading officers moved in when a shop assistant offered the child illegal cigarettes for £3 without asking for proof of age.

They found "a tray full of cigarettes" which were foreign labelled or without the appropriate health warnings in English, a council spokesman says.

Shopkeeper Mohammed Naseer Qadiri, 33, "was unable to offer any explanation for the sale or show he had proper control over activities taking place," according to the council.

His alcohol premises licence was revoked by the Licensing and Regulatory Sub–Committee.

The investigation took place after reports children had been seen smoking outside the shop.

A main problem can be delivering the baby’s shoulders after the head has come out, Warwick University experts say.

Prof Siobhan Quenby said as well as being “extremely traumatic and painful for the mother”, babies can be born with conditions such as Erb’s palsy, where the baby’s neck nerves are damaged.

Samuel (pictured) was larger than expected, at 9lb 14 oz (4.48kg), when he was born in 2004.

His mother Jackie said the birth was "agony" and Samuel, now 13, still suffers from Erb's palsy and may have an operation soon.

Some 4,000 pregnant women are expected to take part in the trial over three-and-half years.
