Shopkeeper loses licence over illegal cigarettespublished at 15:17 British Summer Time 27 September 2017
A Coventry shopkeeper has lost his licence to sell alcohol after being caught selling illegal cigarettes to a child, the city council say.
Trading standards sent a young volunteer, fitted with a recording device, into Qadz Local, Heath Road, to ask for "cheap cigarettes".
Trading officers moved in when a shop assistant offered the child illegal cigarettes for £3 without asking for proof of age.
They found "a tray full of cigarettes" which were foreign labelled or without the appropriate health warnings in English, a council spokesman says.
Shopkeeper Mohammed Naseer Qadiri, 33, "was unable to offer any explanation for the sale or show he had proper control over activities taking place," according to the council.
His alcohol premises licence was revoked by the Licensing and Regulatory Sub–Committee.
The investigation took place after reports children had been seen smoking outside the shop.
