  11. Brexit 'cast shadow on Labour's Broxtowe campaign'published at 01:34 British Summer Time 3 May 2019

    Steve Beech
    Reporter, BBC Radio Nottingham

In Broxtowe a senior Labour councillor tells me campaigning has been overshadowed by Brexit.

“It’s very hard to talk about council houses and town centres when people just want to discuss why we haven’t left yet.”

Predicts that Labour may win four or five seats here but unlikely to overturn Tory majority.

  13. Possible UKIP and Lib Dem gains in Derbypublished at 01:27 British Summer Time 3 May 2019

    Tony Roe
    BBC East Midlands political editor

I don’t think anyone here is expecting Labour to win back control of the council they lost a year ago. In fact I'm hearing they may actually lose some seats.

The Conservatives say they found it difficult to divorce the campaigning from the issue of Brexit. They're uncertain in some seats too and I don't think they're going to gain overall control either.

We could, then, see UKIP picking up some seats and there may be some for the Lib Dems too.

The first declarations are already coming in.

Janghir Khan (Labour) has held the Normanton ward in Derby - very easily, according to BBC Radio Derby's Chris Doidge.

But Labour's Martin Rawson (pictured) - the former deputy leader of the city council - has lost his Derwent seat to Conservative James Testro.

Meanwhile the Conservatives have lost Snibston North to an independent candidate in NW Leicestershire.

  16. Melton Council leader 'bitten by angry dog'published at 01:06 British Summer Time 3 May 2019

    Amy Orton
    Local Democracy Reporter

Ouch! This is Melton Borough Council leader Joe Orson's leg after he was bitten by an "angry Alsatian".

He was out on the campaign trail in Leicestershire leafleting for the Conservatives.

“My problem is, I’m not scared of dogs,” he said. “I don’t like Alsatians as much anymore though.”

  19. 'Looking bad for Labour' in Derbypublished at 00:30 British Summer Time 3 May 2019

    Chris Doidge
    Political reporter, BBC Radio Derby

I'm at Derby Arena where we're expecting the results for the city council a little bit earlier than usual.

It's looking bad for Labour with four or five seats looking likely to go elsewhere and another two or three possibles.

All the other parties could pick up seats with the end result of the council still in no overall control but the Tories hope they'll be the largest party.
