  9. Vaccine drop prompts 'forgotten danger' warningpublished at 14:39 British Summer Time 26 September 2019

    Press Association

A Nottingham expert says families have "forgotten just how serious" infections can be following another drop in the uptake of common vaccines.

Jonathan Ball, professor of molecular virology at the University of Nottingham, said the reasons for this were complex and included anti-vaccination myths and communities who are difficult to engage with.

But he felt much was down to dimming memories of mumps, measles, tetanus, polio and rubella and so people "have started to think of them as simply trivial childhood infections".

Nine Nottinghamshire Police divers who helped in the search for a 12-year-old boy who drowned in the River Trent are taking part in the Robin Hood half marathon this weekend in his memory.

Owen Jenkins's body was found in the river after he died trying to rescue two friends from Beeston Weir in July 2017.

The team are hoping their efforts will help educate others on the dangers around swimming in open water.

PC James Patterson said: "We recently met with Owen's mother Nicola and she had the chance firsthand to thank us for our actions on that day two years ago.

"This is the main inspiration for running for the charity, in the hope another parent doesn't have to go through what Nicola and her family have."

They are raising money for the Open Water Education Network (OWEN), which was set up by Owen's family last year to raise awareness of water safety.

  20. Derby's Guildhall Theatre to remain closedpublished at 08:29 British Summer Time 26 September 2019

    Amy Woodfield
    BBC News

The Guildhall Theatre in Derby will remain closed for an extended period of time after the building was found to be in a much worse condition then expected.

Derby City Council closed the theatre in January after planned work to the auditorium ceiling uncovered further problems.

    Inside Derby's Guildhall Theatre

Earlier this month, findings of more extensive surveys showed the condition of the fabric of the building was much worse than previously thought.

The city council said it has explored putting in temporary measures to make the building safe to open but it says all of them would put the historic infrastructure of the listed building at risk.

As a result of the building's continued closure, the Christmas show, The Christmas Toy Shop Mystery, will be cancelled.

The authority said customers will be refunded in full and offered a special discount for the upcoming pantomime Peter Pan at Derby Arena.

This has been an immensely frustrating situation for us all as each step in the repair process has led to the discovery of additional issues. It is, of course, disappointing that we can't reopen for Christmas but... we need to consider what else we need to do to be able to restore this vital historic building properly."
