  8. 'Public health' unit for region's violent crimepublished at 17:37 British Summer Time 25 September 2019

    Kit Sandeman
    Local Democracy Reporter

Nottinghamshire is to be among the third wave of regions to get its own Violence Reduction Unit (VRU).

The new body - made up of police officers and city and county council staff - has been set up with the aim of tackling the root causes of serious violence in the city and county.

Rather than police dealing with each violent crime as and when it happens, the idea is to take a more preventative approach.

The VRU's work will be "evidence and data-based" – essentially looking at which factors make serious violent crime more likely, and then looking to predict and prevent where it is more likely to occur.

The VRU uses what’s known as a "public health" approach, borrowed from conventional healthcare.

Public health is essentially the idea that encouraging people to look after themselves properly in the first place is better for everyone than treating them afterwards.

Already two cities have been using a public health approach to tackle violence – Glasgow for about a decade and London for a year.

Now, Nottinghamshire and 17 other areas are set to follow suit, and the new group has just been given just under a million pounds by the government to fund it until the end of March.

  20. Kittens soaked in white spirit found in binpublished at 10:24 British Summer Time 25 September 2019

    Amy Woodfield
    BBC News

Two kittens soaked in white spirit have been rescued after being dumped in a bin in Derby.

The RSPCA said a woman heard "scratching and crying noises" on Bowmer Road on Sunday and when she looked inside the bin, she found a tightly-knotted bin bag.

Inside the bag was a cardboard box containing kittens, believed to be 10 to 12 weeks old.

The box was lined with a towel soaked in white spirit - the RSPCA said the kittens were also covered in the toxic substance but were "unharmed".

The RSPCA officer sent to investigate said: "These poor kittens were thrown away like pieces of rubbish.

"At this stage we are not sure about the significance of the white spirit, but it was suggested this was placed in the box to maybe make the kittens drowsy.

"The poor kittens could have suffered a lingering death. It must have been terrifying for them."
