Some crashes at road junctions are caused by drivers "forgetting" they have seen motorcycles approaching, experts have said.
Experiments at the University of Nottingham's driving simulator showed drivers looked at, but seconds later failed to recall, critical approaching vehicles on up to 15% of occasions.
Motorcycles were five times more likely to be "forgotten" compared with a car, the project found.
It suggested when drivers spot a bike they say "See Bike, Say Bike" out loud to reinforce suitable action.

Gedling MP Vernon Coaker has called the Supreme Court's decision on the suspension of Parliament "simply astonishing" and said prime minister Boris Johnson should consider resigning.
The Labour MP said: "We should hold the prime minister to account for what he has done and consider how to ensure the government abides by the law in future."
"It is one law for the prime minister and one law for everybody else," he added.
"He has broken the law and he should suffer the consequences."

East Midlands MPs have been reacting to the Supreme Court ruling Boris Johnson's decision to suspend Parliament was unlawful.
Mr Johnson suspended Parliament for five weeks earlier this month, but the court said it was wrong to stop MPs carrying out duties in the run-up to Brexit on 31 October.
Broxtowe MP Anna Soubry, who is the leader of the Independent Group for Change, said: "None of us ever thought that the court would go so far as actually to quash the prorogation. Parliament has not been suspended, it has not even adjourned.
"Effectively, we are still sitting and the sooner we get back into that chamber, the better."
North West Leicestershire's Andrew Bridgen said the court's decision was "the worst possible outcome for our democracy" and "an absolute disgrace".
The Tory MP told the BBC's Victoria Derbyshire programme: "What we've got is a Parliament that's completely out of step with sentiment of the country. They're holding out democracy to ransom.
"What we're going to see is the Speaker effectively taking control of Parliament and playing to the Remainers' tune until the 31st of October."
