The refurbishment of Derby’s Assembly Rooms won’t now be completed until November 2021, it has been confirmed.

Instead of taking a year to refurbish, the building, which closed in 2014 after a fire, will now be closed for two.

It follows last month’s news the council had “lost confidence” in the project management company overseeing the project.

City council deputy leader, Matthew Holmes, insisted this scheme was "certainly not another A52” and the original budget of £24m was unchanged.

Outside Leicester railway station a statue of Thomas Cook stands.

Near this site, the Midlands Baptist preacher organised day trips between Leicester and Loughborough in 1841.

Those day trips helped Cook build one of the most well-known travel companies in the UK.

Yvonne Russell, who walks past the statue daily, said: "Everyone from Leicestershire knows about Thomas Cook.

"My boyfriend’s from Loughborough and he said it started as train journeys between there and Leicester.”

But now the firm's 178-year reign has ended.

With the increase in cheap flights from the likes of EasyJet, Ryanair, and Jet 2, the High Street package holiday firm fell out of favour with the British public.

Mrs Russell said: “It’s the same where I work at Debenhams, online means no-one comes to the High Street.”

In the shadows of the Thomas Cook statue at Leicester railway station I spoke to Sally Pick who used the travel operator to go to Gran Canaria with her husband and two boys.

Talking about the company's collapse she said: “It’s part of Leicester life, part of its history. I walk past this statue every day I walk to work. We’ve lost something famous about Leicester."

She added: “I feel bad for the staff who may lose their jobs, and the holidaymakers abroad. I hope they have all the information they need and it doesn’t spoil their holiday.”

Education consultant Ivor James said he used Thomas Cook many times in the 1990s.

“I used to go on package holidays a lot with my wife. With Thomas Cook we went to Istanbul, Majorca, Cyprus several times. We always had a good time,” he said.

He called the downfall of the 178-year-old company “a great shame” and said it was "sad" as the company has its roots in Leicester.

He feels as though people may have fallen out of love with the package holiday because like him, they are now booking their trips on the internet.

The couple from Derby said they arrived at the airport not knowing if they were going to get a flight home.

“It was only at the point where the plane taxied to the end of the runway that we knew we were ok," he said.

Despite being very aware of the company's troubled situation he said staff remained totally professional.

“The air hostess was resigned to the fact that her job would be gone at the end of the day," he said.

“I feel very lucky but I feel very sad," he added.
