  4. Bridge collapse: New crossing could be built, says councilpublished at 15:18 British Summer Time 31 August 2016

The collapse of an 18th Century bridge near Tenbury Wells in May has caused a lot of problems - and a solution may still be some way off.

Worcestershire County Council said it's investigating to see if building a new permanent crossing to replace Eastham Bridge would be cheaper and quicker than a temporary replacement.

Plans for a stop-gap have been delayed by the need for an environmental impact assessment into how it would affect the surrounding Site of Special Scientific Interest.

While a way of fixing the road is found, here's what a bus driver who just avoided driving over the bridge before it collapsed had to say at the time:

This is a terribly sad situation for these poor young kittens. It is possible a mother cat was dumped in one of these boxes and she could be straying now."

  12. Bridge collapse: Foundation undermined by fast water say councilpublished at 12:41 British Summer Time 31 August 2016
    Breaking

The collapse of an 18th Century listed bridge was probably caused by fast water undermining the foundations of one of the piers, the county council says.

Eastham Bridge, near Tenbury Wells, collapsed in May, shortly before a school bus was due to cross it.

    Eastham Bridge

The council says its early findings suggest the bridge was a victim of "scour" which occurs when fast water removes sediment around the piers.

    Quote Message

Early findings from our detailed investigations into the cause of the collapse of Eastham Bridge, near Tenbury, are suggesting that the foundations of one of the bridge piers was the victim of scour. We believe that it was scouring that led to the bridge collapsing."

It's been claimed more than three quarters of staff at children's centres in Worcester and Malvern Hills will lose their jobs, as part of county council cuts.

As councillors question children's services bosses this morning, one Labour councillor, Paul Denham, said he understood staffing would drop from 70 to 17.

The local authority has denied job losses will be that great, and says that conversations with providers are "continuing".

    James Pearson
    Journalist, BBC Hereford & Worcester

The head of Worcestershire's Safeguarding Board has told a council meeting that doubts remain over how robust the child protection system is.

The council has heard there's been a big rise in the number of vulnerable children being looked after and monitored by social services in the county.

New figures have revealed 472 children were subject to child protection plans in March, with abuse and emotional neglect the most common reasons.

More than 700 children are now looked after by the county council.
