    Double celebrations were held at a Hereford church, external which has served the community for 175 years to mark two special anniversaries.

    The charge at Huj in 1917 is to be commemorated in a special exhibition from 25 October, the Worcestershire World War One Hundred, external programme has announced.

    On 8 November 1917 a small cavalry force made up of members of the Worcestershire and Warwickshire Yeomanry successfully charged a mixed force of German, Austrian and Turkish soldiers armed with artillery and machine guns, south of the village of Huj in Palestine.

    Major Oscar Teichman and a medical team who followed to the back of the charge were photographed (below) before the outbreak of war.

    The exhibition will take place at the Worcester Soldier Gallery at Worcester City Art Gallery & Museum until mid December. Cultural and heritage organisations in Worcestershire have come together for the county's 100-year anniversary programme.

    The eel population in Herefordshire's rivers has fallen by 95% over 25 years, prompting calls for a ban on their fishing and export.

    The Wye & Usk Foundation, external says in previous years many tonnes of eel could be caught each year, but this year the total catch from the Wye was just 1kg.

    Trustee Tony Norman says the fishing of young eels is decimating the river's stocks.

    In a statement, Defra, external says: "There are strict controls in place in the UK to make sure eels are fished sustainably, and the majority of exports are to restock rivers in other countries where populations are low."

    Former Children’s Laureate Michael Rosen returns to Worcester next week, five years after opening the children’s library at The Hive (pictured), as part of a line-up for this year’s University of Worcester, external Storytelling Festival for Children.

    Rosen is one of the authors, storytellers, illustrators and theatre companies who will entertain children next month in the annual festival, also known as Beeline.

    Now in its 11th year, it will involve more than 3,200 children and runs from 3 until 26 October.

    It features 2015-17 Children’s Laureate Chris Riddell, David Almond and Jeremy Strong.

    A second police force is facing investigation after a man died in an armed police shooting near Bristol.

    Officers opened fire on a car near junction 19 of the M5 at 09:30 on Wednesday, according to an eyewitness.

    West Mercia Police said it received a call at 08:30 about a driver pointing a gun on the M5 in Worcestershire.

    The force has reported itself to the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC), which said it was "assessing the referral".

    Villagers in Worcestershire say they're appalled after about 50 ducks were killed by motorists in Upper Arley in recent weeks.

    Residents are now looking at what can be done and are looking through CCTV to see who's responsible.

    Stephen McLachlan runs the post office, shop and tea rooms in the village and he says it must have been done on purpose.

    There are positive signs that the number of apprentices starting in new roles will have increased compared with a year ago, Worcestershire County Council, external says.

    There were 5,080 apprentices beginning in new roles in the county between August 2016 and April this year.

    That's 94.2% of where the county stood at the end of July last year, so although the apprentice starter figures for April to July 2017 won't be published until later this year, the signs "are looking good that the final figure will be higher", the authority says.

    The most popular industries for apprentices in Worcestershire include construction and engineering.

    A farmer in Herefordshire says he'll be homeless after the weekend, as a result of the council selling off all of its tenant farms.

    After 30 years of farming the land at Rowlestone, Steve Clayton auctioned off his farm machinery yesterday, ahead of the deadline to be out of the house and off the land.

    Herefordshire Council say they need to prioritise which activities they support and that tenant farmers were given at least 12 months notice of the disposal plan.
