  1. Deal struck over future of Grimley Racewaypublished at 08:41 British Summer Time 27 September 2017

    A deal to keep banger and stock racing at Grimley has cost tax payers £20,000.

    Last October the raceway was served with an injunction forcing it to stop holding events, because of complaints from two residents about the noise levels.

    Now they owners have agreed a compromise with Malvern Hills Distrct Council - with fewer races in the calendar and a stricter timetable.

  7. Fire plans 'could potentially affect West Mercia Police's alliance with Warwickshire'published at 17:54 British Summer Time 26 September 2017

    Plans to hand control of fire and rescue services in Herefordshire and Worcestershire to West Mercia's Police and Crime Commissioner, external could "potentially" affect the police force's alliance with Warwickshire police, external, it's emerged.

    While being questioned by councillors this afternoon, PCC John Campion admitted proposals to share support services between fire and police would impact on services already shared with Warwickshire.

    But he stressed any change in the alliance between the two forces would be consensual.

  9. Velo Birmingham apologises over pit stop problemspublished at 17:39 British Summer Time 26 September 2017

    The organisers of Birmingham Velo have apologised to cyclists after some participants missed out on food and water at some of its pit-stops along the 100-mile route.

    A statement says: "No excuses, as organisers we hold our hands up and we will learn from the issues experienced and improve things for next year."

    Riders have complained over long queues for water - and neither food or water at the halfway mark.

    Entrant Tom Wilson wrote on Facebook:, external "I was in the final wave to leave and the problems hit us HARD! I didn't get ANY water from any of the pit stops because of how long the queues were for the ONE tap and had to rely solely on the good graces of people lining the route to get me through it."

  11. Mermaid tail ban: 'Customer safety' key concern says poolpublished at 17:20 British Summer Time 26 September 2017

    A Bromsgrove leisure centre says customer safety is its "number one priority" after a would-be "mermaid" was told she cannot use her flipper.

    Leia Trigger wears a specially-made 'tail' when she takes to the water so she can "explore as a mythical, amazing, graceful creature".

    Until recently she was able to use an indoor pool in her home town, but management told her they could no longer allow her and the £150 tail to swim there.

    A firm running the Dolphin Leisure Centre, Everyone Active, said "current company policy prohibits the use of mermaid tails during public swim sessions, due to the risk it poses to other swimmers".

    Contract manager Neil Cowdrey said: “It can cause injury to other swimmers due to the extended length and movement of the tail, as well as causing an irregular current that can make it difficult for other customers using the pool."

    He said it would be in touch with the customer to discuss alternative arrangements and it would like to apologise for "any inconvenience caused”.

    Cargill, external's decision to move part of production from its Hereford factory to Wolverhampton will affect 115 jobs, the company say.

    Staff will have the chance to transfer to other roles in Hereford and Newent or the Balliol site and the firm be consulting with employees and their unions.

    The firm, one of the county's biggest employers, has also joined forces with Faccenda Foods to create a new company producing chicken, turkey and duck.

    A one-day multi-agency emergency response exercise will take place in Herefordshire tomorrow.

    The exercise, near to Chapel Road in Rotherwas (pictured) will rehearse the region’s civil and military response to an aircraft crashing.

    The simulation will include smoke, so businesses and residents are asked not to be alarmed.

    Herefordshire Council, West Midlands Ambulance Service, West Mercia Police, Hereford & Worcester Fire and Rescue Service, RAF Cosford and the Environment Agency will take part in the exercise.

    Residents-only parking may be introduced in some streets near Hereford city centre.

    Many of the streets off Whitecross Road, Edgar Street [pictured above] and Ledbury Road will have parking limited to one or two hours, unless you have a permit.

    Residents from six wards in the city are being asked for their views in a three-week consultation, which starts on Thursday.

    A race track near Worcester is to stay open despite complaints from some neighbours about the noise

    Stock car and banger races have been held at Grimley for more than 50 years.

    Now the owners of the raceway have done a deal with Malvern Hills Distrct Council, external which will allow them to hold up to nine meetings a year - as long as there are at least 20 days between each event.

    A would-be "mermaid" has been told she cannot use her flipper in public swimming baths.

    Leia Trigger, who's 18, who wears a specially-made "tail" so she can "explore as a mythical, amazing, graceful creature", is now searching for new waters to swim in.

    A man in his 80s on a mobility scooter has been taken to hospital, after a collision involving a car in Hereford.

    The crash happened on Whitecross Road (pictured) at about 12:35.

    The man suffered a minor facial injury, a cut above the eye, and was taken to Hereford Hospital, West Midlands Ambulance Service, external said.

    The M5 southbound junction with the M50 has reopened, after a lorry overturned on the roundabout last night.

    The driver of the lorry, a man in his 50s, was taken to Worcestershire Royal Hospital with cuts to his head.
