  2. Listen: 'Jessica's Corner' to get a colourful benchpublished at 11:11 Greenwich Mean Time 8 December 2016

    David Burns
    BBC Radio Humberside

It's been hailed as a "victory for common-sense and compassion".

Last month Kirkella and Westella Parish Council refused to consider a colourful design in memory of Jess Lawson who died on a school trip to France.

The parish councillors favoured a 'conventional' black and brown bench.

It prompted the resignation of the council's vice chair and caused something of a public outcry.

Now East Riding of Yorkshire Council have decided "enough's enough" and yesterday they took the decision to not only install the bench but to pay for it too.

I spoke to Jess's father, Tony Lawson:

It's estimated that it affects over three million people in the UK and the provider of the Meals on Wheels service in North East Lincolnshire say it isn't unusual to see someone suffering.

The charity BAPEN which raises awareness about the condition, say a third of people who suffer are over the age of 65.

The total figure has almost trebled in the last 10 years.
