    Former deputy prime minister John Prescott is expected to come out fighting today and demand the government finally gives cities across Yorkshire a fair deal.

    The ex-Hull MP is due to speak at the Edinburgh Festival later.

    He wants to see council leaders across big northern cities put aside their differences and form a so-called "Council of the North".

    The Labour peer believes it could rival Scotland and Wales.

    If you live in Hull or East Yorkshire, you'll soon be able to have a consultation with your GP without needing to leave your home - providing you have access to the internet.

    A total of 33 local practices are trying out a new online service which allows patients to submit their symptoms via PC or mobile device and receive a diagnosis within a couple of days.

    The service, external also offers around-the-clock NHS self-help information, signposting to services, and a symptom checker.

    Tennis facilities in Hull's Pelican Park have been saved after falling into disrepair.

    A regeneration project at the park has been driven by local residents who've successfully attracted nearly £250,000 worth of investment.

    The funding means the site, in the east of Hull, can be transformed into a community tennis "hub".

    A decision could be made today on whether 66 new homes can be built in Waltham in North East Linconshire.

    The land, off Bradley Road, has been earmarked for the development and planners are due to consider the application today.

    A number of objections have been received from people who live nearby, but the application is recommended for approval with some conditions attached.

    A man from Scunthorpe who's wanted in connection with several "serious offences" remains on a rooftop he climbed onto on Monday evening.

    Kyle Ferguson has evaded arrest on several occasions, according to Humberside Police, and is currently on the roof of a house in Salisbury Close.

    Yesterday, police described the operation in the area as "very extensive" with cordons in place on nearby streets and public transport routes in the area affected.

  10. Watch: Local lifeboat crews to appear on new BBC2 seriespublished at 09:57 British Summer Time 16 August 2017

    The work of lifeboat teams across Yorkshire is going to be featured on national television.

    Crews from Flamborough, Bridlington and Whitby among others will appear in a new 12-part BBC2 series, which starts this evening.

    Between now and November the programmes will show dramatic footage of real rescues carried out lifeboats located all round the coasts of Britain and Ireland.

  11. Mariners fans boycott EFL Trophy gamepublished at 09:42 British Summer Time 16 August 2017

    A group of Grimsby and Doncaster fans are boycotting their EFL Trophy game in two weeks time.

    They are asking supporters not to go to their Checkatrade Trophy game on 29 August and join them for a kickabout between the two club's fan groups instead.

    The supporters are unhappy with the organisers inviting reserve and academy teams from larger clubs into the competiton.

    There are fears this will extend into the league structure, but that has been denied by the Football League.

  12. Sierra Leone mudslide: At least 600 still missingpublished at 09:33 British Summer Time 16 August 2017

    Officials in Sierra Leone say at least 600 people are still missing, following the mudslide that swamped hundreds of homes on the outskirts of the capital, Freetown.

    Freetown is twinned with Hull.

    Rescue workers have so far recovered nearly four hundred bodies. The Red Cross has warned it is now a race against time to find survivors.

    The United Nations is drawing up plans to deal with any outbreak of diseases such as cholera and typhoid.

    A smoke-free generation by 2025? That's what Hull City Council hopes a new smoking ban in public playgrounds will contribute towards when it comes into force later today.

    Smoking is of course banned in all pubs, restaurants and public indoor venues, but from today, Hull City Council will make all 91 of its playgrounds in the city smoke free zones too.

    Initially, there'll be no penalty for those caught breaking the rules, but the Council says the policy will be reviewed after six months - and if it doesn't work then enforcement is an option it could explore.

    Its hoped the move will discourage young people from taking up smoking.

    The work of the Whitby lifeboat crew is being showcased on BBC TV tonight.

    The largely volunteer group are featured in a new series, Saving Lives at Sea, highlighting the work of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI),

    The 12-part documentary series features real rescues carried out by the charity’s lifeboat crews and lifeguards around the UK and Ireland.

    The first episode features the Whitby crew, with a father and daughter being pulled from the sea after being swept from rocks.

    The series begins at 20:00 on BBC Two.
